Mount Gambier bowlers take on regional clubs

Avery busy week for the Mount Gambier Bowls Club began on Wednesday with round 3 of Open Midweek Pennant action with the Blues travelling to Millicent to take on the local Reds.

An exciting game was fought out with two close rinks ending up with a drawn match with the scores on 43 shots each.

The Blues rink of Barb Milstead, Gary Widdison, James Farran and Ron Cox were able to defeat the Millicent rink skippered by Arthur O’Donnell with a 22-19 win.

The locals gained a narrow 24-21 win on the other rink to secure a draw and share the points.

The Blues travelled home with four points which was enough to take it to top of the premiership table after round 3, but a bye in round 4 will see them fall a spot or two.

The Reds had a round three bye and look to regain top spot when they take on the Port Mac Reds at the Bob Cranwell Centre in round 4

Friday Ladies Pennant Round 4 action saw the Mount Gambier ladies travel to Naracoorte and despite the wet conditions they were able to return home with six valuable points.

The stars of the day were the rink of Barb Butchart, Maria Stabler, Margaret Marshall and Jane Calleja who had a good day on the green winning 26-15.

This result was enough to secure a 50-44 shot victory and fourth spot on the ladder.

They return to Naracoorte in round 5 to take on Naracoorte RSL and continue their good start to the year.

Saturday’s round 4 of LSEBA Open saw the Division 1 Reds travel to Penola.

The game began in wet and windy conditions with the Reds starting off well and were able to hold a slender lead at the break.

The locals were in control of one rink but the Reds were gaining the upper hand in the other two, and went on to win two rinks gaining 10 valuable points with a 69-51 shot victory.

The Greg Carpenter skippered rink dominated their opposition winning 16 ends for a comfortable 31-16 victory.

The victory saw the Reds climb into the top 4 as they look forward to a round 5 matchup against cross town rivals Mount Gambier RSL Red.

The Blues in Division 1 played host to Mount Gambier RSL Blue and were able to win two rinks and secure 10 points with an impressive 74-57 win.

The best Blues rink was Maryka Heaver, Daryl Raneberg, Gary Hocking and Ian Von Stanke who shut out the opposing rink skippered by Ron Ploenges with a dominant 35-22 win.

The 10 points took the Blues into fifth spot and will travel to Kingston in round 5 to continue their good start to the year.

The Division 2 team travelled to Millicent to take on the Reds and found the going tough in the windy conditions.

The locals mastered the conditions, winning all three rinks for a 80-63 win.

The rinks skippered by Mark McDonald and Eddy Smith made their oppositions work hard both going down by three shots.

They travelled home sitting in sixth spot and looking to bounce back against Naracoorte RSL at home in round 5.

The Division 3 South Reds took on Mount Gambier RSL Blue under the roof and found the visitors in top form.

The Blues enjoyed the conditions winning all three rinks for a 78-66 win.

The host rinks skippered by Ray Hutchesson and Jane Calleja battled hard all day with both going down by the narrowest possible one shot margin.

The loss left the Reds in fifth spot as they travel to Millicent to take on the local Reds in Round 5 to get their season back on track.

The Blues in Division 3 South travelled to Millicent to take on the local Blues and were able to win two rinks but lost 76-70 in a brave effort in trying conditions.

The rinks skippered by David Holland and 1st year bowler Kale Calleja both had good wins securing four valuable points, leaving the Blues in 9th spot and looking forward to round 5 when they will host cross town rivals Mount Gambier RSL Red.
