Mount Gambier club makes history

A busy period at the Mount Gambier Bowls Club began last Wednesday with Midweek Pennants. Both Mount Gambier teams travelled across town to the RSL greens.

The Red team played RSL Blue and returned home with the points thanks to a strong win by the Bob Cranwell led rink.

It was a tight contest with the Reds victorious overall by two shots.

Mount Gambier Blue played the RSL Reds and put up a great effort on both rinks but just fell short at the end with final scores favouring the home team 43-38.

An excellent away effort by both Mount Gambier teams promises a good season for the club in the Midweek Pennant competition.

The women took to the greens on Friday for Ladies Pennant competition with the Mount Gambier team travelling to Beachport to take on the local Red team where they found the hosts in good form.

A good effort by the visitors made the local team fight hard to run out eventual winners 57-35

History was made at the Mount Gambier Bowls Club Bob Cranwell Centre on Friday with the first LSEBA Pennant game played under lights.

The action in the Division 1 game between the two Mount Gambier teams kicked off under the roof in front of a good crowd. The reigning LSEBA Premiers Mount Gambier Red played the Blues in a tight game.

The Blue team of Leanne Hentschke, Michael Spong, Gary Hocking and Gary Widdison were all playing well and keeping their team in the contest.

It was not until the last five ends the Red teams skippered by Daniel Langdon and Tony Bowditch were able to gain some control over the game to lead the team to a 70-53 shot win.

Mount Gambier’s Division 2 team travelled to Lucindale on Saturday and looked to bounce back from a first round loss.

A superb effort by the team of Tim Radley, Jim Farran, Margaret Marshall and Mark McDonald winning 32-21 helped the visitors return home with the points in a narrow two shot win.

Back under the roof at home the two Division 4 teams fought it out with the Reds scoring three good rink wins to record a strong 87-46 win with the highlight being the 34-15 win recorded the team of Kathryn Gray, John Hughes, Diana Harris and Geoff Collins.
