The Mount Gambier Bowls Club recently unveiled its new mural ‘Valley Lake Views’ created by new club member and artist Phil Clements.

The opening was attended by Mount Gambier Bowls Club members and supporters and Mr Clement’s family.

The commissioned piece was created with oil and acrylic paint over 172 hours and depicts a view of the Valley Lakes from the Centenary Tower which is the logo of the Mount Gambier Bowls Club.

Mount Gambier Bowls Club president John Reppin said the mural embodies the spirit of the local bowls club.

“It was earlier this year the board of the Mount Gambier Bowls Club discussed the concept of having a mural done … and it was shortly after that a new member joined the club to try his hand at bowls,” he said.

“Little did we know the new bowler was such a gifted and talented artist and it was only by a chance discussion that we found out Phil was an artist and had completed other murals.

“Valley Lake Views was a vision brought to life by the remarkable talents of Phil who poured his heart and soul into its creation.

“It really does encapsulate the tapestry of our community’s history, showcasing our amazing lakes area and invoking cherished memories.

“May it serve as a constant reminder of the enduring spirit of our club, a beacon of inspiration for each and every member, new and old.”

Mr Clements said he learnt how to paint from his grandfather Stan whose words of wisdom he can still hear to this day while creating art.

“When you pick up a paint brush as a four-year-old and learn to paint at the feet of your grandfather, the chances are you might pursue a future in the creative arts,” he said.

“He taught me everything I know practically about art.

“Sometimes when I paint I can still hear him and his words of praise and encouragement.”

Mr Clements said he has been regaled by stories of the Valley Lakes area from Mount Gambier Bowls Club members throughout the painting process.

“That is taken to a whole new level when I understand the stories and the memories that go with it,” he said.

“It’s more than just a painting, it’s a collection of memories for people.

“I want to thank the Mount Gambier Bowls Club and committees for engaging me in this commissioned work and for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to work with such amazing people.”
