New look for Twenty20 competition

New look for Twenty20 competition

The Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association has turned back the clock with its 2020-21 Big Bash Twenty20 Cup fixture.

After last summer’s tournament mirrored a six-team Barber Shield format, the shortest format’s competition has returned to its traditional eight-team structure.

Usual suspects South Gambier, Penola, East Gambier, West Gambier and North Sportsman’s will be joined by two new faces.

After a season off, Millicent returns to the fold, while a MGDCA representative team will be an exciting addition showcasing the region’s top junior talent.

MGDCA president George Kidman said the development team is a “win-win” situation.

“We are trying to create participation and interest in the Under 17 age level, so the team will target the best kids in Mount Gambier around that age,” he said.

“They are going to play with a couple of senior men alongside them, so it is really exciting to develop some good cricketers.

“It might be tough for them, but it will be a great effort if they win a game against a powerful senior side.”

The juniors will fight in a short three-round blast amongst the eight teams split across two pools of four.

The Demons will be the ones to catch as they chase a three-peat, while the Roos seek revenge after two consecutive grand final defeats.

One minor round will be played each month before the fast-paced competition finishes with a bang during an action-packed finals day at Frew Park in the second weekend of February 2021.
