Olympic pride on full show

Retired Millicent couple Sue and Dennis Smith leave you in no doubt where their allegiances lie regarding the Olympic Games under way in Paris.

They have placed the five Olympic rings on their front gate along with a message of support for their grandson Brin Liddell and sailing partner Rhiannan Brown who both hail from interstate.

The Smiths moved to Millicent a few years ago for their twilight years.

The young sailors race a tough challenge for a podium finish according to the official preview.

“In the Mixed Multihull, Brin Liddell and Rhiannan Brown head to Paris with nothing to lose and everything to gain,” stated the previewer.

“Initially targeting LA2028, the pair was propelled into selection after a series of solid results at European and world-class regattas.

“While they are in Paris to gain Olympic experience, a top 10 finish and medal race would be a personal best for the pair.”

Elsewhere on the water but in a different discipline is Millicent-born Jed Altschwager who is an Australian Paralympic rower.

He teamed with Nikki Ayers to win a gold medal at the 2023 World Rowing Championships and they have been selected to compete at Paris.

Millicent has a small number of past Olympians.

Grant Mitton attended Millicent High School from 1975 – 1978 and represented Australia in hockey at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Grant’s father the late Don Mitton was the principal of Millicent South Primary School (now Newbery Park) for those four years in the 1980s.

Millicent-born Graham Boase represented Australia in the triple jump in the Olympic Games in Tokyo 60 years ago.

The triple jump record he set at Millicent High School in the 1950s stands to this day.
