The OneFortyOne Pioneers women will play their first home games this weekend, hosting the Frankston Blues at Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre on Saturday night and the Ballarat Miners on Sunday.

The Pioneers are coming off a successful double header road trip last weekend, scoring two solid wins.

The women took the court against the Sandringham Sabres on Saturday night, securing a 17 point win, before they backed up the double header against the Waverley Falcons on Sunday afternoon, securing a comprehensive 29 point victory.

Head coach Matt Sutton said his side was excited to be able to kick off round two with a double header of home games.

“We are looking forward to playing in front of our fans, we have got a bit of work to do this week as Frankston is extremely tough and challenging and Ballarat is as well, they are two elite teams,” he said.

“We are going to have to be at our best.

“We always enjoy playing at home in front of our fans and are looking forward to hopefully making them proud of our efforts.”

Sutton said new captain Isabella Brancatisano was particularly keen to lead the side for the first time on the home court.

“She likes to play basketball, she loves to play the right way, it’s been a no-brainer for us to have her as our captain,” he said.

Sutton said the side had also been able to introduce some of its younger members into the court roster, with Tenielle Human and Cara Nulty getting some valuable minutes during the opening round.

“I rate our youngsters highly, they have been part of our program for some years, they have always approached their trainings well,” he said.

“They are now at an age they are showing they can compete at this level, any opportunity they get is well deserved.”
