Opening night pencilled in for speedway return

The Borderline Speedway will roar back to life next month with plans in place for a huge summer of racing.

Sprintcars will race around the Mount Gambier oval again on Saturday, November 28 with around five classes on show.

After two race meetings including the Easter Sprintcar trial were cancelled due to COVID-19 last season, Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said the return was a huge boost for the racing community.

“The speedway fraternity wanted to get up and running, so on November 28 we will open up the speedway for the season,” he said.

“We will readdress the situation financially after that because we need a spectator base to survive and make each meeting viable.”

The exciting news has arrived after Murray Bridge announced cars will hit the dirt at its facility next Saturday, which will be the first race meeting since COVID-19 slammed the brakes on the speedway world.

The Borderline Speedway committee held its annual general meeting in August and many were not sure if racing was possible in 2020.

However, with cars on their way to compete at Murray Bridge the Limestone Coast decision makers reconvened last Friday and made plans for this summer.

Jennings said more events could follow later in the season, but future races were dependent on the fortunes of next month’s opening act.

“Our main concern is November 28 and if it all goes well, we will have another meeting on December 28 before the Kings Challenge,” he said.

“We have a calendar proposed, but the COVID-19 situation will determine where we go forward.”

Unfortunately, the proposed schedule will not include the popular World Series Sprint cars category after it was cancelled by Speedway Australia.

However, Jennings believes there is still a strong desire to race amongst the teams and drivers.

“Numbers are strong at the moment because the consensus is they all want to come have a skid and help Borderline Speedway survive the situation,” he said.
