Order medal honour

Former Liberal member for Barker James Porter was honoured today with the Medal of the Order of Australia in the annual Australia Day honours list.

Mr Porter was recognised for his 15 years of parliamentary service in the House of Representatives between 1975 and 1990.

He was a 25-year-old Adelaide lawyer when he succeeded retiring ex-minister Dr Jim Forbes in the blue-ribbon seat.

The high point of his career in Canberra was several key roles on the Opposition frontbench.

Mr Porter left politics at the 1990 election after being defeated for Liberal Party preselection by Adelaide businessman and former Nangwarry Station manager Ian McLachlan.

Over the past 33 years, Mr Porter has worked as a lawyer and company director and on the family’s farming property in the Naracoorte area.
