Pinpoint Ryan finds accuracy

Leading Saturday’s Stableford charge at Blue Lake Golf Club was former West Gambier WBFL sharpshooter Jarrod Ryan.

Ryan (8) has steadily improved each week and on Saturday it all came to fruition starting with five regulation pars before quickly erased a hiccup with a birdie on the ninth to turn square with the card with 35.

A couple of bogeys in the middle of the back nine almost derailed him but some impressive birdies put Ryan back on track to his overall score of 43 with just two one-point holes.

Apart from Ryan cleaning up the overall and A Grade prizes, it was a tight race to take the grade win with Brett Perryman and Tim Bates finishing tied on 39 points.

Perryman picked up four three-point holes and a birdie on the last to win the count-back over Bates.

It was two points back to third place getter Michael Johnston (12) who could not capitalise on either of the par fives.

It was regulation golf for all the prize winners in B Grade with Matthew Pritchard taking the win with splits of 17 and 19.

Pritchard only had one non scoring hole on the third, while Stephen Smith (13) and Graham Burke (19) finished on 35 points.

A double count back had them both having 13 points over the last six holes, the decision coming down to the last three holes where Smith finally prevailed.

It was a lot more clear cut in C grade with Nick Driver (23) winning with 39 points built on splits of 20 and 19.

He was nearly matched by Tony Morandin (23) in second place with 38 points, also scoring on every hole.

It was a day of mixed emotions for Ronda Edwards on Saturday up at the BLGC’s Stableford competition.

Dressed head to toe in Western Bulldogs gear to celebrate AFL team colours day at the club, Edwards played one of the best rounds of golf in her career, returning to the club house with 41 points in her pocket and well clear of the next best golfer on 36.

But in an irony that mirrored her team, Rosemary Martland pipped her on the post, returning with her own superb score of 42 points.

Martland’s ability was on show early with three pars and a birdie on the opening four holes.

Ladies club captain took third place with a measured 36 points after splits of 19 and 17.

Only 38 players fronted the starter for the midweek competition in blustery conditions where five players tied on nett 73, requiring an involved and meticulous count back.

Coming out on top was veteran Jim Ferrazzola with 95-22-73.

Getting off to a rough start Ferrazzola managed to keep it all together over a consistent back nine and despite a double bogey on the 17th his score was still good enough to clinch the win.

David Dowie (11) is bouncing back from some injury concerns a number of months ago and a disappointing triple bogey halted his charge.

In third place, wily Garry Fox (12) was also on track to take the outright win before also stumbling slightly on the last with a double bogey.
