Pioneers bounce from one tough match to another

The OneFortyOne Pioneers women will hit the road this weekend for a Victorian double header in NBL1 South conference round five action.

The Pioneers will take the court against the Ringwood Hawks on Saturday night, before backing up against the Frankston Blues on Sunday.

Ringwood sit eighth on the ladder, having split their opening rounds with three wins and three losses, while Frankston are 11th with a 2/3 record.

The Ringwood Hawks are coming off a win last week, having produced a strong all-round team performance to beat the Sandringham Sabres 87-78 on Sunday afternoon.

Head Coach Matt Sutton said his players would regroup from Friday night’s loss before hitting the road this weekend.

Reflecting on Friday night’s loss, Sutton said his side would learn from the defeat.

“Waverley are the defending champs and they had a full group … we just did not shoot the ball at an acceptable clip,” he said.

“We had started with a good plan and some shooting that we would hope would improve, but they were a good team and they capitalised on a few things we could have done better.”

Sutton was full of praise for Pioneers vice captain Haliegh Reinoehl, who top scored against the Falcons.

“We think Haliegh has been an absolute warrior for us and she has been battling really hard,” he said.

“Edie (Easterby) has really showed she belongs and her effort is certainly worthy of more opportunity.”

Sutton was proud to be involved with the club’s first Anzac Round home game, which featured many special tributes during the night.

“I thought it was awesome,” he said.

“I thought the club did a really good job of representing the day, the lights for the Last Post and everything they did was really cool in addition to having the live music there.

“It was a great experience for the fans.”

Looking ahead to this weekend’s match ups, Sutton said as per usual the Victorian double header would feature two challenging games for his side.

“It’s a very competitive league, we are going to have to prepare well and improve in a few areas,” he said.

“Ringwood are a really strong outfit that we have always had good games against.

“They have a point guard that used to play for Geelong in Sarah Elsworthy who is having an outstanding season, we will need to do a good job on her defensively.

“They are a pretty strong and deep team.”

The OneFortyOne Pioneers currently sit 18th on the ladder, with a 1-5 win loss record.
