The sun was shining at the reopening of the Nangwarry Play Centre after a lack of numbers forced the kindergarten’s closure earlier this year.
The centre is open every Wednesday during the school term from 9:30am to 12:30pm for children up to five years of age.
Nangwarry Play Centre director Alisha Byrne said the first session focused on sensory play, boosting a positive turnout with children as young as four months attending.
“At the moment it is about gauging the children’s interests so I can build upon them instead of enforcing what I think they want,” she said.
“Waterplay is always going to be a hit and the dress ups, play corner and playdough have all been very popular.”
Mrs Byrne said she was wanted to build a community around the play centre, allowing it to stay open and utilise the space.
“It is about keeping families local because if this area closes they will be forced to travel elsewhere for their children’s early childhood education,” she said.
“There is a lot that can be done, but the actual core building itself is an amazing space so it would be sad to see it empty.
“It is great to see the space bringing families together because most families are new and can be quite secluded in this area.
“It would be so gut-wrenching to see these doors close for good and to try and reopen again and build momentum would be too hard We have one shot to get this right so it is now or never.”
