Grant District Council has announced its Australia Day Award winners for 2022 – recognising the outstanding involvement and service that residents contribute to the wellbeing and enhancement of the community across the district.
Allendale East teenager Luke Bald has been crowned the Young Citizen of the Year Award, while Yahl’s Tammy Harry was named Citizen of the Year.
Luke, 17, is a committed and proactive member of the Allendale East community where he has implemented numerous initiatives at Allendale East Area School which has positively impacted the whole school community.
As a driven change-maker Luke has supported events such as Anzac Day and Lego League, organised physical activities such as a walk and fun run to raise awareness for Type 1 diabetes as well as supporting fundraising initiatives that benefit the community.
A talented photographer, Luke has also held his own exhibition and won competitions with his amazing local photographs.
Luke said he was honoured and humbled to receive the accolade.
“To win the Young Citizen of the Year award means a lot to me and is an honour and privilege,” he said.
“The community I live in means a lot to me and to see the effort and work that I have put in recognised also means a lot.
“This is an honour that will stick with me for a long time to come and is something I will never forget.”
Deputy Mayor Gill Clayfield was full of praise for the teenager, who was dedicated to his community.
“Council is very proud to announce Luke as our Young Citizen of the Year to acknowledge his leadership, advocacy and community mindedness which help enhance our community,” she said.
Ms Harry has made an extraordinary contribution to the community for more than 25 years.
A passionate and committed volunteer she has held many office bearer roles on committees, supported local events and sporting clubs across the district as well as preserving history through celebrations and publications.
“Tammy is a dedicated community member who always puts her hand up to help and is highly regarded across her numerous volunteer roles both present and past,” Deputy Mayor Clayfield said.
“Council is very pleased to announce Tammy as the Citizen of the Year to recognise and reward the huge contribution that she has made to our community over the past 25 years.”
Deputy Mayor Gill Clayfield congratulated this year’s winners and thanked them for the valuable contribution they made to the district.
“I have the pleasure of announcing the recipients of our 2022 Australia Day Awards who all make Grant District Council a great place to live, work and play,” she said.
“Council would like to congratulate the winners and thank you for your commitment and the amazing contribution that you make in our community day in and day out.
“Council would like to acknowledge all of the award nominees who collectively weave the fabric of our community, thank you for the amazing contribution that you make each day.
“All nominees for the awards will also be recognised for their valuable efforts and supporting roles they play across the district.
“Due to the impacts of COVID-19 the awards will be presented at a private event on Australia Day to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.”
