Race makes a splash

A burst of colour will flock to Beachport’s Pool of Siloam (Salt Lake) on January 8 for an iconic event.

More than a thousand ducks have landed on the waters of the lake in the past and the 21st annual Beachport Duck Race is anticipated to attract even more.

A barbecue and amplified music add to the carnival-like atmosphere.

All eyes will be on the mock paddle-steamer which releases the ducks from the middle of the lake mid-afternoon.

Loud shouts from around the edge of the lake coerce the plastic ducks as they bob their way up and down the boat-generated ripples to the finish line.

An enthusiastic local identity with a strong voice is invited to commentate the steady race until first, second and third place are plucked at the shore line.

The Beachport Lions Club with the Beachport Surf Lifesaving Club assist in running the event with use of a mock paddle-steamer, cooking the community barbecue and manning the finish line.

At the end of the event children swarm to the finish line to take home a duck as a souvenir of the day.

As in the past, before the main event, ducks can be purchased in the morning at a dedicated stall on Railway Terrace.

The street will be closed to vehicular traffic in the morning while it is lined with stalls for the seaside town’s annual summer market day.

Take time to soak up the atmosphere and wander along the street which is expected to be boasting a variety of local produce, arts and crafts, jewellery, locally made items and fabrics.

A wide range of local produce will be on display for both tasting and sales including locally grown herbs and spices, home-baked items such as pasties, sausage rolls, pickles, honey, jam and many other tasty treats.

A fundraising initiative of the Beachport District Development Association, funds raised support various Beachport community projects.

Street markets are also held by the Beachport District Development Association over the Easter and October long weekends.
