Radio station back on track

There has been overwhelming community support for a major fundraiser to benefit the Millicent community radio station 5THE-FM.

The station is presenting a Spicks and Specks themed Quiz Night at the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre on September 29 with local musician and 5THE-FM presenter Jack Lane as the host.

5THE-FM board of management chairman David Walshaw said support was coming in various ways with strong ticket sales and local businesses who are donating goods and prizes on the night.

He said the number of participants has already reached its 250 capacity.

Mr Walshaw said the community station had made outstanding progress in less than a year.

“Back in November, the station had lost its broadcasting licence, had large debts and hardly any sponsors, members or presenters,” Mr Walshaw said.

“The Office of Business and Consumer Affairs was in the process of winding us up.

“Now we have 120 paid-up members, sponsors are coming back on board and we have over a dozen presenters so we can broadcast seven days per week.

“There are even some days when we can broadcast local programs from our studios in Railway Terrace, Millicent from 6am until 10pm.

“Additional presenters are being trained to go on-air.

“We have reduced our outstanding debts, cleaned up the surrounds of the station building and have secured a temporary broadcasting licence.

“There has been a lot of hard work but now we can take a breather and have fun at the Spicks and Specks quiz night.

“Jack Lane is not giving much away about the questions other than to say your music knowledge will be tested across all genres and all eras.”
