Rain dampens tennis action

The second round of the 2021-22 Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association season was impacted by rain with only two of the three senior grades hitting the courts.

The round was supposed to be ignited by the Division 2 players on the Olympic Park courts on Friday night, but the weather gods were not kind.

Wintry conditions forced all four Division 2 battles to be washed away.

To the relief of all involved, the puddles had been cleared by the time Saturday afternoon rolled around to allow the other two grades to face off.

The Division 3 contests were played all over the region and after the opening pair of rounds, two sides have emerged as the ones to beat.

Mil Lel and the Suttontown Tigers appear a cut above being the only remaining undefeated sides.

The side shaping up to be the team to beat is the Tigers, who have won all but three sets on offer.

Suttontown travelled to Malseed Park to take on West Gambier on Saturday and showed its strength as the afternoon went on.

Brody Sharam got the Tigers off to a winning start with a 6-2 singles win over Chris Robinson.

However, the home side answered back straight away through Justin Robinson, who dominated the next rubber 6-1.

But Suttontown took control for the remainder of the afternoon as Kobe Cole, Aimee Inglis and Agnes Doyle secured comfortable singles wins.

West launched a little fightback through Layla McPherson, who dominated her singles stoush with Molly Lennon, while the Robinsons teamed up brilliantly to win the opening double.

But that was all the joy the home side would taste for the remainder of the afternoon.

Cole, Nathan Beck, Casey Sampson, Doyle and Lennon were all undefeated through the entire doubles phase to wrap up a convincing six-set win.

The other undefeated team Mil Lel had a much easier time on the court.

Unfortunately, Gambier Centrals was forced to forfeit 10 of the scheduled 12 sets on Saturday.

Although there was not much quantity of tennis at Olympic Park, there was still plenty of quality from the two singles battles.

Jason Brooks and Mitchell van Riet traded punches back and forth in a contested one on one duel.

In the end, Mil Lel’s Brooks emerged victorious in a tiebreaker over the spirited Centrals skipper.

Kate Fabian and Maddy McGregor were the only women to take to the court and enjoyed their contest.

McGregor fought hard, but could not prevent Fabian from winning 6-3.

The two singles wins put a bright spot on Mil Lel’s 12-0 victory.

The closest Division 3 battle was fought between the Suttontown Dons and Uniting Church.

The Uniting Church side travelled to Pinehall Avenue with plenty of intent and showcased it straight up.

Uniting Church rookie Jace Maxwell showed no nerves on the seniors stage to takeout his singles game with Christian McCombe 6-3, while Sergio Casaro was in even better form winning 6-1.

With the home side on the back foot after two early defeats, it needed to lift and did so in convincing fashion.

Joseph Lapatha overcame Peter Jelleff 6-0, Jo Millar defeated Bec Hogg 6-1, Trudy-Anne Doyle knocked over Jess Stewart 6-2 and Kimberley Murrell edged out Angela Hopes 6-4 to give the Dons the perfect way to wrap up the singles.

The hosts’ success continued as they won the first two sets of doubles.

McCombe and Cameron Pritchard overcame Maxwell and Cesaro 7-5.

Lapatha also teamed up with McCombe to score more success.

Casaro and Jelleff managed to put Uniting Church back on the board with a 6-1 win and Hogg and Sue Murray also secured a tight 6-4 triumph.

Another two-game win from Stewart and Murray was enough to keep the visitors interested in the overall picture.

But a crushing 6-0 victory from Millar and Stephanie Beck ensured Suttontown escaped with its maiden win over the year 7-5.

The Suttontown Tigers hope to continue its winning streak when it faces Uniting Church under the Friday night lights of Olympic Park.

The Suttontown Dons will also be keen to maintain the momentum against West, while Moorak meets Centrals after the bye.

Division 1 also went ahead with Centrals/Uniting Church looking the goods against Glencoe and Reidy Park also putting in a strong performance against West.

Both games were won by the 10-2 margin and an undefeated Centrals/Uniting Church outfit will receive its biggest test this Saturday afternoon facing a resurgent Reidy Park team, while West travels to Glencoe.
