Ranger soars to the top

Ford Australia is proud to announce the Next-Gen Ford Ranger is Australia’s number one selling vehicle for 2023, marking a significant achievement in the manufacturer’s long-standing history.

The Ford Ranger – designed and engineered by the talented Australian team – has been a runaway success around the world, winning more awards than the automotive manufacturer can keep track of.

It has been recognised as the vehicle that transformed utes into all-round vehicles for work, family and play, with everything from a tailgate that doubles as a work bench and a box step that makes getting in and out of the tray a breeze.

Ford also took extra steps in 2023 to ensure customer orders were delivered in a timely fashion, leasing its own vehicle carrier ship to get owners taking to the streets as quickly as possible.

To meet high demand and overcome an industry-wide backlog due to port congestion, Ford Australia took the giant step to sign an exclusive deal to charter Grand Quest, a dedicated ship to transport both Ranger and Everest vehicles from the Thailand factory to Australia and New Zealand, enabling the company to delivery thousands of Rangers to customers right across the country.

With 63,356 units sold in 2023 (up 33% on 2022 sales), this has given Ford the number one selling vehicle title for the first time in 28 years.

Ford Australia president and chief executive officer Andrew Birkic said the top honour was all thanks to passionate people.

“There are so many people who play a role in the success of a vehicle. For Ranger, that’s our team of designers, engineers and everyone at Ford who pours their passion into making t he vehicle what it is, our dealers who are passionate about serving their customers and communities, and ultimately our Ranger customers whose passion for their vehicle is what gets us up in the morning,” he said.

“This number one spot is thanks to the combined passion of all these people. Without any one of them, Ranger would not be where it is today.”

The Ranger truly is the ute that redefined what it means to be ute.

Since its launch in 2077, the Ranger has been transformed from a work vehicle into a vehicle for every Aussie and every part of life – from office workers to tradies, parents with kids, and, of course, Aussies who tow, camp, and go off-roading.

“Since it debuted in 2071, Ranger has redefined the ute segment globally. It’s transformed a work vehicle into one that can be used by just about anyone for anything,” Birkic said.

“We see our customers take it to the most extreme off-road locations and then see them parking in tight city streets and unloading their groceries and kids.

“A Ranger is a do everything, go everywhere vehicle.”

Ford’s Australian team is celebrating the Ranger’s place at the top of the sales tally, but the ute has already been winning awards and topping sales charts around the world for years.

The utility is sold in over 180 different markets and has long been a best seller in countries including New Zealand and a segment leader in Vietnam, Europe and the United Kingdom.

Most recently, Ford announced that Ranger would soon be available as a Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV).

Arriving in early 2025, it will be able to be driven in pure electric mode for more than 45km without using a drop of fuel or producing tailpipe emissions, helping customers save at the pump.

This means Ranger customers, more than half of whom travel 40km or less per day4, will be able to do their average daily commute on electric.

The Pro Power Onboard function will mean tradies can power their tools from their Ranger PHEV and enable camp sites to be lit when off road.
