Region braces for tourist influx

Limestone Coast caravan parks are anticipating busy times leading into the summer period and tourists are getting ready to roll in with Christmas just around the corner.

Blue Lake Holiday Park owner Samantha Ham reported ‘extremely busy’ times over the South Australian and Victorian school holidays.

“Our reservation system had been nearly fully booked for quite some time before the actual holidays starting and it continues on even now,” Ms Ham said.

“Christmas is – and has been – fully booked since August with the odd cancellation.

“These cancellations are getting booked within hours.”

Ms Ham said the park was still receiving lots of walk-in tourists who were searching for powered sites.

“Some of our guests are on a lap of our great country, others are just wanting to get away for a weekend, coming from all over Australia,” she said.

“It’s great to see people out travelling again.

“International tourists are still slow to return to our shores.”

Beachport Southern Ocean Caravan Park manager Heidi Prouse said the park had been busy, with 2022 holiday numbers on-par with last year.

“I think this year probably people have travelled to Victoria now they can,” Ms Prouse said.

Ms Prouse said the Beachport market weekend was particularly busy and believed the recent nice weather had encouraged people to travel.

Ms Prouse said tourists were happy to be out and about and the majority of their tourists were coming from Victoria and New South Wales.

“November is looking promising,” she said.

“Christmas we are looking pretty much booked-out those first two weeks.

“And obviously in November a lot of the grey nomads are travelling because the weather is better.

“Bring on some nice weather and the travellers that will hit the road.”

Robe Holiday Park owner Keryn Moore said their park had also been busy over the Victorian and South Australian school holidays.

“There were really steady numbers pretty much a week either side of the long weekend and into South Australian holidays,” Ms Moore said.

“We are definitely looking steady leading up to Christmas and then Christmas and January is flat-out as usual.”

Ms Moore said the nice weather attracted people who lived closer by, such as Mount Gambier or inland areas.

“The long weekend is always busy, the weather helps with last-minute bookings but typically the October long weekend is pre-booked out prior, so rain, hail or shine people are usually coming,” she said.

“But the nice weather certainly filled up the rest of the park.”

Ms Moore said the park’s two biggest tourist groups were from South Australia and Victoria and said Victorians were appreciating being able to travel to South Australia again.

“It is good to have them (Victorians) back because they have not been here for so long and they have always been a big part of our customer base,” she said.
