Regional jetty repair work to begin

Much-needed repairs to Southend Jetty began yesterday while work on the Beachport Jetty will start next month, weather permitting.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis said the Beachport Jetty was one of the longest and most picturesque jetties in South Australia.

He said it was a state heritage asset and a popular fishing and recreational hot spot, both for locals and for visitors to the region.

“These upgrades will ensure everyone will continue to be able to enjoy these two Rivoli Bay jetties for many years to come,” Minister Koutsantonis said.

South Australian company Maritime Constructions has been awarded the multi-million dollar contract to carry out works on both jetties, which are expected to support approximately 25 full-time equivalent jobs during construction.

The Southend Jetty work involves repairs to four lower landings and removal and replacement of two others, after they all sustained damage from several large swell events in 2021.

The repairs to the four landings are expected to be completed in time for the upcoming lobster fishing season which starts next month.

Full project completion is expected in early 2023.

The Beachport Jetty upgrade includes the refurbishment of timber piles, framework, steel cross bracing, decking and railings; installation of new safety ladders; replacement of decking; and repairs to the landings, handrails and fenders.

The work will typically occur on and near the jetty landings, ramp and towards the sea end of the jetty and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2023, weather permitting.

To safely facilitate these works, the sea end of Beachport Jetty will be closed to the public. The shore end will be closed intermittently as required with advance notice signage in place to advise jetty users.
