Rose show entries bloom

More than 100 roses are expected to compete for the $500 prize for the most outstanding rose in the upcoming Millicent Show.

It is the 13th consecutive year that McCourt’s Garden Centre, of Millicent, has made a $500 voucher available to the winner.

Proprietor Christine Agnew said her Davenport Street business was again pleased to support the Millicent Show in this way.

“I think the champion rose prize will also encourage more people to get out into the gardens and enter the Millicent Show,” Ms Agnew said.

“Millicent has some the best roses around as we have good soil and good water.

“We are on target in the current climate to have roses in good bloom at show time.

“The humidity does encourage the presence of black spot on leaves but this does not affect the blooms.

“Some of the newer breeds of roses are resistant to diseases like black spot.”

Meanwhile, all is go for the 145th show which begins on Friday. The show office is now open every week day for entries and inquiries.
