Scholarship honour for young achiever

AMount Gambier student is among a group of remarkable South Australian students recognised for academic achievement ahead of this year’s National Reconciliation Week (May 27 to June 3).

Grant High School’s Jazmin Bingham has been named a 2023 Dame Roma Mitchell Scholarship recipient.

Jazmin was one of 10 Year 11 students awarded the scholarship to help them complete the South Australian Certificate of Education.

Since 1993,121 Aboriginal students have received this scholarship, which also helps them pursue their educational and professional goals after they leave school.

The awards complement the South Australian Education Department’s Aboriginal Education Strategy, which aims to increase outcomes for Aboriginal students by supporting them to be proud and confident learners from birth, in school, and beyond.

Education Department chief executive Martin Westwell said the department was committed to improving outcomes for young Aboriginal people and they should feel supported in their educational pursuits.

“These awards and scholarships acknowledge academic achievement, school commitment and students’ career aspirations,” he said.

“Completing qualifications such as the SACE gives young people access to opportunities in further education, employment and beyond.

“The knowledge, skills and confidence they gain from their time at school helps them seek out these opportunities and make choices about their future.

This is reinforced by the support and care of their families, friends and the staff who encourage them every day at school.”
