Scientific creations concocted in city

Local children were given the opportunity to see the wonders of science on Sunday August the 27th with the Science Collectives bringing its Science Fair to Mount Gambier.

The event – held at the Mount Gambier Showground show hall – offered the chance for young families to come and learn, with the science collective being focused on teaching Children about science, technology, engineering and maths.

During the event three shows were put on hosted by the Science Collectives’ SciFiBri, which included a wildlife showing with help from the Nature Education Centre, with the kids getting a good look at some exciting wildlife such as snakes and lizards.

The second show was the froth and flame, which provided the kids with plenty of excitement as bubbles were caught on fire and elephant’s toothpaste was made.

The final show was the liquid nitrogen showing the incredible things which the freezing cold liquid can achieve.

Between the shows children were given the opportunity to explore various aspects of STEM with lots of different activities on offer to fuel their creativity and curiosity.

Such activities include making smart circuits, spaghetti and marshmallow towers, slime and straw bridges.

Also on offer was a chance to go into the SciWorld Starlab, which gave the children a chance to experience the wonders of the cosmos with images of stars, planets and other celestial bodies projected onto the interior surface of the large dome which acts as a giant screen.

Between the shows the Nature Education Centre also had lots of critters and creepy crawlies on display.

Youngsters were able to get a good look at some species of lizards, mice and even stick insects.

The Mount Gambier science fair had a great turn out with many local kids leaving having had an excellent hands on experience and wonders of making their own scientific discoveries.
