Shared love of art

New exhibition ‘Birds of a Feather’ will be officially opened at Penola’s Gallery 54 on Sunday (March 26).

The exhibition features a variety of artworks by Artshed Artists in acrylics and charcoal, each artist hoping to convey their story and a growing confidence in their art journey.

Participating artists include John Mossop, Sue Foureur, Michelle Curtis, Margaret Boardman, Andrea Bartetzko, Annette Cassidy, Shirley Hogg, Dianne Nicholson, Debbie Prescott and the group’s newest members Kayleen Harris, Julie Linnell and Julie Forgan.

The opening will begin at 1.30pm with wine and nibbles provided and local author Maya Linnell, pictured right, is the opening speaker.

The exhibition name ‘Birds of a Feather’ stems from the saying ‘birds of a feather flock together,’ referring to likeminded artists gathering together for enhanced creativity, the strength of working in a group, laughter, support, successes, failures, constructive criticism, life lessons and coffee.

The exhibition space hosted the Artshed Artists for their first exhibition in September 2021, and once again presents the opportunity for these twelve local, rural artists to exhibit within their community, gaining confidence and experience.

Facilitator Ann Carpenter and the twelve students desired a local celebrity to officially open their exhibition and were thrilled when Ms Linnell came on board.

Ms Linnell is a bestselling fiction author who grew up in the Limestone Coast and now lives in western Victoria with her family, however she regularly returns to the region and still considers it home.

Her four novels include references to the South East and her latest novel, Kookaburra Cottage, will be released in June which is also likely to strike a chord with local readers, set in South Australia in the fictional grape-growing district of ‘Penwarra’.

Ms Linnell said she was delighted to support fellow rural creatives and looked forward to seeing the Birds of a Feather exhibition in person.

The exhibition will run until May 7 with all works for sale.

The gallery is open 10am until 3pm from Thursday to Sunday.
