Ataste of the USA literally returned to Mount Burr on Saturday night when the proprietors of the general store served up American-style food exclusively to mark the passing of almost 420 years since the first Thanksgiving Day by the Pilgrim Fathers.
Thanksgiving is when Americans commemorate the Pilgrim Fathers who sailed from England to North America early in the seventeenth century.
It has been a wonderful occasion for the United States of America ever since the early 1600s and American-born storekeeper George Copelin and his Aussie wife Rosie again made sure the date did not pass unacknowledged at Mount Burr in 2021.
For the second consecutive year they extended the seated capacity of the Thomas Drive premises to 50, programmed the jukebox to only play American artists and festooned the building with the stars-and-stripes flags.
As in 2020, the Copelins obtained a special circumstances licence and so wine, beer and assorted alcoholic drinks were available.
Diners were treated to such American main course treats as roast turkey, baked ham and corn-on-the-cob.
With 30 years of commercial cooking experience, Mr Copelin took charge of the kitchen.
Mr and Mrs Copelin have run the shop for over three years and have previously staged other dinners devoted to American food to mark Independence Day and Halloween.
Celebrating Independence Day was a big part in the life of Georgia-born Mr Copelin before moving to Australia four years ago.
Among his Thanksgiving Dinner patrons was Millicent resident Rose Phillips.
“We got together a table of friends and had a ball,” Ms Phillips said.
“We booked early as we knew it would be a sell-out.
“They ended up having a waiting list.
“George and Rosie and their staff did a great job.”
