Shoppers flout mask regulations

Mount Gambier business owners are frustrated that shoppers are failing to adhere to face mask rules when entering their stores.

SA Health states that a person must not enter or remain in an enclosed public place unless they are wearing a face mask.

However, business owners believe the requirements are being disobeyed by many members of the community following the recent opening of South Australia’s borders.

A local Mount Gambier retail store owner, who did not want to be identified for fear of reprisals, said she was being harassed by customers who refuse to wear a mask inside the business’ premises.

“We did not make the rules but we have to abide by them – and we will – to keep everyone safe and for the greater good of the community. We suggest customers do the same,” she said.

“It is a busy time of the year and we have immunocompromised staff whose safety should not be at risk and juniors that especially do not deserve to be harassed.

“As a business we ask to see your exception or that you wear a mask in our store. We do not want to get a fine and we do not want you to get a fine. Thank you to everyone who has done the right thing and worn their mask in store.”

An SA Health spokeswoman said – with SA’s borders now open – the state could expect to see COVID-19 cases in the community which is why it was important people continued to wear masks when around others.

“Masks are an effective barrier to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and provide an additional safeguard while we are out and about in the community,” she said.

“With Christmas fast approaching and interstate travel now very much back on the table, it’s even more important than ever for people in the Limestone Coast to remain vigilant and continue to wear masks if they can.

“It’s a good idea to have spare masks in the car or in your pocket or bag so that you always have one handy when you need it and cloth masks should be three layers to stop small particles passing through.”

The spokeswoman said a suitable face mask included reusable cloth masks and single-use face masks that cover the nose and mouth.
