Shoppers urged to dig deep and help end period poverty

People are encouraged to donate to the Share the Dignity drive this month to support women and girls experiencing period poverty.

The nation-wide initiative is delivered in partnership with Woolworths with a mission to end period poverty and is held each March and August.

Share the Dignity Limestone Coast volunteer Nikki Kirkland said she volunteered for Share the Dignity because she wanted to help women in need.

“My role is to collect products from the stores that are (collecting) donations from people who care and to distribute those to either Foodbank Mount Gambier or Red Cross in Mount Gambier,” Ms Kirkland said.

“Foodbank Mount Gambier has requested 200 pads, 100 tampons and 25 incontinence pads.

“Red Cross Mount Gambier needs 50 pads, 125 boxes of tampons, 75 incontinence pads and six menstrual cups.”

Ms Kirkland said it was not expensive to donate, with pads and tampons often on sale in stores.

Since Share the Dignity was founded in 2015 by Rochelle Courtenay, the charity has donated over 3.4 million packets of pads and tampons to those in need with the help of more than 6000 volunteers nationwide.

There are around 13 Share the Dignity collection boxes in the Limestone Coast, spanning from Mount Gambier to Bordertown, Naracoorte and Millicent.

Mount Gambier stores involved include Terry White Pharmacy, Priceline Pharmacy, Star Discount Chemist, Bare Necessities Lingerie and Woolworths.

Ms Kirkland said they were always seeking more Share the Dignity volunteers in the Limestone Coast.
