Sister act boosts research

Apair of Millicent sisters have now closed the book on a joint fundraising venture which raised almost $15,000 for cancer research.

Kristy Ryan and her Adelaide-based sister Lauren Halliday achieved the five-figure sum for the Tour de Cure charity bike ride through many donations of cash and goods as well as a quiz night and golf day in Millicent and a sausage sizzle in the capital city.

They called their charity quest as ‘Doing it for Dad’.

The two sisters took part in the annual Tour de Cure to honour their father Arch Sunderland who passed away from cancer in 2021.

Kristy’s personal tally was $11,920 and this placed her fifth on the tally of fundraisers.

Her efforts were recognised by the Tour de Cure organisers as she wore the coveted red jacket on the opening day of the ride.

“What a great three days away on the Tour de Cure bike ride,” Kristy said.

“I met some wonderful people and heard some incredible stories from so many.

“Thank you to Lauren for guiding me from the start with fundraising and getting prepared for the tour.

“It was definitely an experience I will keep with me for some time.”

Lauren was one of the 97 riders while Kristy was part of the 30-strong support crew.

Kristy was the rear car navigator and accompanied Lauren and the other riders in peleton two.

Beginning on April 2, the Tour de Cure SA Discovery Tour was a three-day, 300km bike ride from Hahndorf to the Barossa Valley and finished at Glenelg.

There were blue skies on each day of the ride and it passed without incident.

The overall South Australian fundraising target was $500,000 and this was exceeded by $20,000.

All funds will stay in South Australia and be used for cancer research.

They will be split evenly between Tour de Cure’s South Australian partners, Flinders Foundation and UniSA.
