South backs up ‘imposing’ hit with classy field effort

Under 12 Sims Shield
 – South Gambier v North Sportsman’s

South Gambier were too strong for North Sportsman’s recording a convincing 114 run victory on Friday night.

The South line-up delivered an imposing 144 runs last week, and backed it up with consistent, disciplined bowling and fielding this week.

After a strong batting effort last week, Patty Sigley opened the bowling for South this week and set the tone for the innings.

He knocked over North’s key batsman Jesse Mitchell in the first over without scoring.

Sigley’s second over started with a run out and ended with North’s Oliver Liddle out caught by Archie Sims.

With three wickets down in only the third over things were always going to be tough for the North boys.

Elliott Barry fought hard for North carrying his bat through the innings, finishing undefeated.

Jimmy Crozier in his first season of Under 12s competition also put in a good effort sticking it out for 14 balls.

Bowling honours were shared by the South line-up, with wickets to Cooper Howard and Elijah Finnegan on top of Sigley’s two.

All of the South boys got to roll their arms over for an over or two and were economical, backed up by solid fielding.

South will have the bye over the next two weeks, while North will look to continue their improvement against East at McDonald Park.

Under 14’s Halls Trophy
 – Mil Lel v Penola/Naracoorte

Mil Lel took on Penola/Naracoorte at Frew Park and after a wash out on day one the game was reduced to a T20 on day two.

Penola/Naracoorte won the toss and elected to bat on a good pitch and dry, fast outfield.

They were under pressure right from the start of their innings due to some tight Mil Lel bowling and good ground fielding.

Ryan Lucas and Oliver McCracken were excellent with the new ball.

With wickets falling regularly it was Bernie Watson holding the innings together with a well made 20 not out batting at number three, with no other batter reaching double figures.

Wickets were shared for Mil Lel with off spinner Rhys Grigg being the best at 2/0, restricting Penola/Naracoorte to 55 all out in the 17th over.

Mil Lel’s innings got off to a quick start and runs flowed evenly throughout.

There was some excellent running between wickets early and then some big hitting towards the end, resulting in a big total of four for 144 after 20 overs.

Grigg topped off an excellent game by making 22 before retiring, opening the batting with Ryan Lucas making 17.

Harry Hicks made a quick 31 before retiring in the middle of the innings with all other batters making between five to 10 retired runs and keeping momentum going.

The four wickets were shared between the Penola/Naracoorte bowlers with most bowling a good line and length backed up by some excellent fielding.

Both sides are looking forward to some sunny dry weather to enjoy their cricket as the season goes on.

Under 17 O’Donoghue Shield
 – Mil Lel v West Under 17 Day two

Mil Lel went into bat in the box seat for the win, holding West Gambier to 95 on day one of the clash.

Frew Park looked a picture, and the outfield was a bit quicker and the sun was out for the chase.

West’s opening bowlers in Robbie Case and Bailey Rothall started well, beating the bat and keeping it tight early but could not get through the defences of Noah Virtanen and Charlie Carson.

The two moved the score along to 37 before Carson was dismissed by the spin of Kahne Jeffrey for 16, Virtanen retired and that brought Jack Leishman and Nick Bald to the crease.

Bald did not last long departing for three followed by skipper Pfitzner for four, both to the bowling of Tom Richards.

Leishman was joined by the hard-hitting Archer Virtanen and the two got the score to 86 before Jeffrey got the wicket of Virtanen on the stroke of drinks.

Mil Lel at the halfway mark only needed a handful of runs to claim first innings points but the West bowlers kept things tight and when Leishman retired steady wickets fell to Patrick Dycer, Harry O’Loughlin and James Williams.

This saw Leishman return and notch up his half century before Mil Lel was bowled out for 145 runs.

Leishman remained 52 no and Noah Virtanen 19 the best for Mil Lel.

West bowler Kahne Jeffrey took 3 for 14 and Tom Richards and Harry O’Loughlin both picked up two.
