Aluxurious collection of wines will be released by Wynns Coonawarra Estate tomorrow.
The 2023 ‘Wynnsday’ collection comprises five beautiful medium-bodied Coonawarra reds from the exceptional 2021 vintage.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate senior winemaker Sue Hodder, pictured below, was looking forward to launching the premium wines.
“Whilst we are always very proud of our wines and we have amazing vineyards in the Terra Rossa soil, the 2021 vintage was one of the absolute best in my 30 years at Wynns, so we are really happy to release them,” Ms Hodder said.
“The heralded 2021 vintage was similar in many ways to the highly regarded 2010 vintage, where strong coastal Bonnie Upwelling breezes swept across Coonawarra, cooling the region down, and there was low rainfall and no extreme heat or cold.
“The wines have a noticeable iridescence to their colours and a similar vibrancy and depth of flavour.
“2021 is a vintage that we are very proud of and one that will be cellared in Australia and indeed around the world.”
Ms Hodder said the 2023 Wynnsday Collection represented a deep understanding of the true Terra Rossa soil of Wynns Coonawarra Estate from what is bound to be a classic Coonawarra vintage.
“Wynnsday 2023 is headlined by the 66th vintage of one of Australia’s most cellared wines, Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, and sees the return of Black Label ‘Old Vines’ Shiraz made predominantly from our two oldest vineyards,” she said.
“Our Glengyle Vineyard north of V&A Lane was selected as our single vineyard release in 2007, 2009 and now in 2021.
“Finally, (winemaker) Sarah Pidgeon has made finely-structured, early picked Cabernet and Cabernet Shiraz wines from the Wynns V&A Lane vineyards.”
The collection includes their Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, Black Label ‘Old Vines’ Shiraz 2021, Glengyle Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, V&A Lane Shiraz 2021, and V&A Lane Cabernet Shiraz 2021.
Ms Hodder and Ms Pidgeon diverge from traditional food pairings and explore Asian foods, vegetarian and fish dishes, with this year’s chose dish hoisin glazed baked salmon with wilted greens.
“The Black Label Cabernet, our most important wine, goes so beautifully with salmon, and every year I pick a different salmon dish to go with the cabernet,” Ms Hodder said.
“We have got medium-bodied wines at Wynns, and we think that lends the opportunity of pairing with vegetarian food and seafood.”
Ms Hodder also travelled to Sydney last week to showcase Wynns wines, attending functions including a tasting in Darling Harbour, a luxurious black-tie dinner and she met with media, retailers, consumers, and collectors, including internationals.
“If we can show them Coonawarra in Australia without always having to go away it is even better because it adds to their memories of being in Australia,” she said.
“I feel like it was a great opportunity to bring the Terra Rossa soil and The Gables to life in Sydney.”
The 2023 Wynnsday Collection is available from Wednesday June 7 from wynns.com.au and fine wine retailers across Australia.
