Speck strikes ace at Blue Lake

The week’s golfing action was completely over-shadowed by a rare feat achieved by Brenton Speck in last Tuesday’s stroke competition at the Blue Lake Golf Club.

On his way to a convincing win, Speck scored a slam dunk hole in one on the 14th green.

Speck (84-21-63) claimed the jackpot Lakes Caddy Shack hole in one prize and his sub-40 back nine will hold pride of place for some time.

Graham Burke (86-21-65) secured the runner-up position ahead of Brad Talbot.

Peter Roughana brought all his experience to the course in Saturday’s stableford event to take the overall win.

Roughana scored 43 points with a double bogey on the 16th his only blemish.

A wipeout on the 11th hole almost proved costly for A Grade winner David Dowie in his chase for the overall win, but a birdie on the seventh helped his cause.

A count-back was needed to determine the minor places after Tom Renzi and Tony Steen tied on 38 points.

Renzi (11) had his struggles over the front nine with a couple of double bogeys, but bounced back with a birdie on the 17th to overcome Steen, Another score in the 40’s saw Stephen Kamphuis take out B Grade.

Kamphuis scored on every hole to hold off a large chasing pack led by Derek Sargeant and Kevin Stark one point behind.

Russell Armstrong was a clear winner in C Grade 39 points.

Armstrong was the epitome of consistency over the front nine for 21 points before a more wobbly back nine.

Another count back was needed to separate five players, who all finished two points behind and Brian Dunn claimed the runner-up prize from Frank Pinneri.

Brad Talbot and Zach Westwick both cleaned out the eagles nest.

The women also had to bring their A game with them in Saturday’s stableford competition and Carol Megaw led the way with an excellent haul of 41 points.

Megaw (32) had a regulation 18 points over the front nine, but scored heavily with three pars over the back However, she did not have it all her own way with Fiona Punton scoring 40 points.

The pair finished well clear of Cherryl Hill (26) in third place after a bitter-sweet round of 36 points.
