Speedway hits top gear

The 2023/24 Borderline Speedway season got under way on the weekend with some fast and furious local racing action taking place.

After having to cancel the first meeting of the season due to wet weather, the second meeting was initially under threat too as early Saturday morning delivered poor conditions.

Fortunately the weather eased up in time and the show was allowed to go on.

The meet’s main event – the Ti Bills Wingless Sprints – featured Tyson Martin showing why he held the state champion title as he sprinted to a win.

Rylan Furler finished in second place, with Mathew Symons following behind in third.

Also racing on the night was round 3 of the Southern Street Stock Series, with local Anthony Beare electric around the track to claim line honours followed by Steve Garner and Drew Flatman.

The junior sedans also took to the bull ring, giving the crowd a look at some young talent.

The top start category of the juniors saw Warrnambool’s James Oliver claim first place honours, while Riley Greig from Murray Bridge was not far behind in second, with Portland’s Flynn Annett rounding out the podium.

In the New Stars category, young Millicent driver Jayden Garner came in first after recording some impressive quick laps.

Following Garner was Jackson Warrener in second place who was closely followed by fellow young Portland racer Tyler Wilson.

The new stars from the local club Violet Thorne and James Becker both proved themselves promising racers, improving their times each race.

Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings was relieved that racing got under way, after it looked uncertain earlier in the day.

“Overall we did not know whether we would get the meeting done or not, we made a decision at 1pm we would race,” he said.

“The track was very wet to start with but thanks to the wingless sprints competitors who did some wheel backing and some hot laps, which brought the track in and by the end of the night the track was very fast.”

Jennings was also thankful to Aston Logistics for sponsoring the night and said he looked forward to the next race meet on December 28.

Overall Jennings was pleased with the turn out of racers, noting that some may have chosen to stay away due to the uncertainty surrounding the weather.
