State Khanacross Series revs into Mount Gambier

The Glenburnie Saleyards Complex hosted the South Eastern Automobile Club/Limestone Coast Offroad Club Khanacross Series round 3 with the South Australian State Khanacross Series round 4 and the Victorian Khanacross Series round 8 all on the same day/night course under Director Curtis Boyd’s selection of tests to keep the locals and visitors entertained for the day.

Having a field of 30 competitors, the Director laid out a simple double loop test to get the adrenaline running.

Best of these drivers on the first run forward, Barry Nowell used the awesome power of his own built KTM special Buggy to be the quickest of all 21.49, clear of fellow Victorian James Ware Senior (23.38) in his Turbo powered XR4 Fiesta in second, and Geoffrey Wilson (24.60) for third (and first SEAC and SA Series).

With the same test, same direction, Nowell went a little quicker in the extreme buggy with 20.92, Philip Wilson (24.13) (SEAC) in his Falcon made second with a well held slide, and Wayne Casey (24.22) improved his previous run by half a second to finish third.

In the reverse direction of this drive the Nowell buggy (Vic) again showed a clean pair of heels for top spot (20.43) from James Ware Jnr (Vic) (23.12), James Ware Snr (Vic) (23.14).

The second pass in the reverse direction saw Nowell continue to dominate the field with 20.25, James Ware Jnr (22.70) made second, and James Ware Snr (22.77) third.

Director Boyd made some changes to the layout and these changes suited some drivers’ styles more than others.

Barry Nowell’s buggy made short work of the twisty stuff and again posted fastest time (31.72) with James Ware Snr (34.20) next, followed by Darren Colgan (34.67).

On the second run, James Ware Snr finally made the top spot (23.50) from Adam Pass (24.33) and Jason Sims (24.56).

When the course was reversed the number one returned to Barry Nowell with a clean run of 33.29 for first, followed by James Ware Snr (33.86) and Darren Colgan (34.50) third.

On the second reverse run James Ware Snr topped the list with 33.80 almost the same time as his first run, Nicholas Charrett (34.33) improved by a second and moved into second spot and Darren Colgan (34.41) made third.

For another course setup in the dark, a simple test if you can see the markers and do not get lost, Nicholas Charrett set the pace with 23.76, Jason Sims (24.24) was second, equal with James Ware Jnr.

On the second attempt and with the torch on as bright as it would go, Barry Nowell’s 22.85 made first spot, Jason Sims (23.43) was next, with James Ware Snr (23.68) third.

Barry Nowell made easy work of the last course and set the top time of 47.76 for the rest to beat.

Jason Sims (49.23) did his best for second, with Darren Colgan (49.41) third.

Thanks must go to Curtis Boyd for directing and Jody Viitanen and other officials who helped to put the event together.
