The beaches of Beachport were filled with some of the state’s best Surf Life Savers recently, as the Sharkskin SA IRB Series hit town.
The event was part of Surf Life Saving SA’s premier IRB racing competition, which involves six carnivals hosted across the state, followed by one day of state championships, where an overall club winner is crowned and given the David Earl Trophy.
The races are fast-paced and simulate rescue situations.
Specifically, drivers and crew race out to navigate a set of buoys (cans), pick up a team member from the water and return them safely to the beach.
The Beachport double header event hosted seven South Australian surf lifesaving clubs competing, including Port Noarlunga, Somerton, Aldinga Bay, Brighton, Goolwa, Seacliff and Christies Beach.
Across the two days, crews competed in over 80 events.
Port Noarlunga SLSC secured the best results, claiming 135 premiership points across the two days.
Surf Life Saving SA Sports Manager David Visockis was delighted with the Beachport event.
“The Sharkskin SA IRB Series provides an exciting opportunity for our IRB drivers and crew members to test and showcase their lifesaving knowledge and skills, with all races simulating rescue situations,” he said.
“So, beyond the thrills of competition, it acts as essential winter training which ensures our surf lifesavers are rescue-ready for the summer season.
“This year Surf Life Saving SA was pleased to secure a partnership with Sharkskin, giving our team the ability to heavily invest in the sport and promote greater participation.
“As a result, we have seen significant growth in the number of clubs and athletes getting involved, which is fantastic.
“The double header at Beachport is certainly a fan-favourite and highly anticipated event in the fixture each year. Not only does it provide a fast and furious spectacle for locals and visitors alike, it also importantly allows us to connect with our South East surf clubs and support the community.”
