Student leadership ‘re-invented’

McDonald Park Primary School students have been reinventing the role of leadership.

The change has led an abundance of Year 6 and 7 students to apply for positions as ambassadors, team captions and committees for environment, promotions and events committee to lead their school.

A number of students received the opportunity to lead their school in these aspects taking on a wide range of leadership duties and responsibilities around the site over the year.

Deputy Principal Sharon Day said the leaders represented their school at public events, led parent tours and helped raise funds for special projects.

Some representatives took on special projects such as collecting soft plastics to raise funds for a garden chair, painting sheds or running lunchtime games with some groups fortunate enough to attend camps and excursions.

“It was the first time we had broadened our student leadership to include more responsibilities and it was a resounding success, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from staff and students alike,” Mrs Day said.

“We would like to thank Mrs Harding, Ms Bundy, Mrs Spencer, Ms Eldridge, Mr Lewis and Mrs McLean for volunteering to work with leadership groups during 2021.”

Mrs Day said the 2022 student leadership progress would soon begin and while the numbers would be smaller in each committee it would look similar to the new 2021 leadership model.

“Year 5 students will be given information about student leadership and invited to apply for the various committees which will look similar to the 2021 range,” she said.

“Written applications will be submitted and students will nominate which committees they would like to serve our school community through the selection process which will occur towards the end of term 4.

“Thank you to all our student leaders in 2021 for doing an amazing job and for making a difference in your school community.”
