For Nathan Goodenough, a 35-year-old waterside worker from the Adelaide suburb of Queenstown, last Thursday’s time-graded meeting at Tara Raceway provided him with his biggest day at the track.

This was after Razzle Ann and Shantui’s Ember brought up his first double following an “on again-off again involvement” in greyhound racing that has spanned something like 20 years.

Last Thursday was the second time Goodenough had raced at the Mount Gambier track.

Previously, at the end of July, he had made the trip down by himself with Shantui’s Ember.

“Shantui’s Ember won that day and I was so impressed with the set-up down here that I said the next time I returned I would bring some of the family,” he said.

“So, also making the trip was my partner Emma (Vordermaier) – who convinced me to get back into greyhound racing if that’s what I really wanted to do – together with one-year-old daughter Sophie and my mum Dianne.”

Victorian breeder Kath Boyle, along with Annette, Leon, Ben and Karli Clarke of Tasmania, race both Razzle Ann and Shantui’s Ember – the former opening her winning account at start number four after arriving at Queenstown last month.

By Kinloch Brae out of Van Ann – a winner of 13 races and $60,000 in stakemoney – Razzle Ann chased Miss Nala for much of the 400 metres journey in the Hyland Fox Maiden before finishing the stronger for a neck win in 23.69 seconds.

Shantui’s Ember maintained her unbeaten record at Tara Raceway when chasing Galactic Medusa and Mediation in the Produce Store Stake (400 m) until the home turn where she took a rails run before going on to a 1½ lengths win in 23.28 seconds.

Another visitor to land a double last Thursday was Lewiston trainer Scott Feltus who won with Bend The Knee and Starlight Meg.

The latter was also part of Feltus’s last double at the track back in March when he had also been successful with American Mustard.

A giveaway greyhound, Bend The Knee found his way into Feltus’s kennels in June after having raced on six previous occasions.

And he was chasing his first win at start number 15 when lining up in the Commercial Hotel Maiden Stake (400 m).

On the back of a last start 14 lengths third placing up the straight at Murray Bridge the previous week when a $50 chance, the son of Spring Gun x Dundee Tango was considerably shorter at $1.70 in Thursday’s event.

And by the home turn Bend The Knee had rounded up the tearaway leader Troublesome Fury before running away to a four lengths win in 24.41 seconds.

Now, it has to be said, the winning time was pretty steady.

So steady, in fact, that it turned out to be the slowest time run at the track this year.

But Feltus had achieved what he had set out to do with the dog.

“Well, the thing is, you do not get any extra prizemoney for breaking track records,” he said.

“But being SA bred means today’s win will see him pick up an extra $1000 breeding bonus so it’s been worth bringing him down here.”

Feltus actually supplied the quinella in the last race, the Williams Crane Hire Stake (400 m), when Starlight Meg led all the way to defeat Jorja Can Burn who ran home well to be beaten by a half length in 23.65 seconds.

Kevin Bewley, also based at Lewiston, took the training honours on the day with Slim Sherman, Beautiful Bounty and Escape Inn – a winner last week – knocking up a running treble.

Standout of the trio was the former NSW chaser Slim Sherman, the son of Dyna Double One and 12-race winner Stylish Fringe bringing up his first SA win and seventh overall.

Having only his second start for Bewley after a luckless first-up effort at Tara Raceway last week, the black and white dog led all the way in the Bartholomew Pick 6 Stake (400 m), winning by 7½ lengths in a best of day 23.02 seconds.

Bewley’s treble matched his effort of November 7, 2019 at Tara Raceway when he had been successful with Waikiki Big Girl, Taylor Jayde and Callanish Sprite.

Local trainers to enjoy success last Thursday were David Peckham (Aston Respect, Sweet On Me), Tracie Price (Compton Amy) and Robert Chuck (Galactic Shima).

Peckham also won on the following day at Murray Bridge with Aston Olenna but missed out qualifying for the TAB Country Cup final with Silent Jacko, Aston Model and Maximum Refusal.

Representing Murray Bridge in the final at Angle Park on Friday, October 8 will be Sudden Force (Lauren Harris) and Barbados Express (Ben Rawlings).
