Summer season launched

The Mount Gambier Netball Association (MGNA) Summer Season will hit the courts next Tuesday for the first time in two years.

The season will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in two-time slots; 6pm and 7pm, finishing up in March next year.

Mount Gambier Summer Netball Association secretary Stacy Jantosh said registration numbers were high, which was pleasing to see.

“On the Tuesday night there are four teams each for U13s, U15s and Ladies A and 12 teams for Ladies B,” she said.

“On the Wednesday night, we have four teams for the Mixed Juniors and 14 teams for Mixed.

“We did not run a competition last year and I believe the indoor netball is not happening at the moment which I think contributes to the elevated numbers.

“We are getting people from other leagues; I know there’s a few from Western Border, which is really good to see.”

Jantosh said it was purely a social netball competition, so it was all about getting out there and having fun.

“Fast4 Tennis is operating on both days as well and the bar will be open on the Wednesday so we’re just trying to make it a really good social time,” she said.

“A lot of people really enjoyed coming back to netball and socialising so we’re really just trying to get people excited again about playing sport.

“We’re hoping that people will enjoy it, just really trying to get back into it and it was very noticeable obviously when COVID was around.

“I know in the winter numbers have been down so we’re just encouraging people to participate again.

“We’re also looking at what we can do to have more male teams, so this is a really good way to do that.”

MGNA is trialling a new online platform for the summer netball season which is accessible now through its Facebook page.

Jantosh said the association was also looking into ‘Walking Netball’ for the New Year.

“We have had quite a few people inquire about it,” she said.

“It is slightly different in that it is pretty much netball with walking, but I think it will be encouraging to all age levels.

“It is really good for someone who might have stopped playing netball due to health issues but still wants to get out and be active.

“You’re not actually running or jumping, you’re less likely to fall and there is less pressure on all the joints.”
