In round 8 of the Veolia Limestone Coast Women’s Football League and the game of the weekend was between the top two sides in South Gambier and Penola, who both had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

The Demons came out early and made the Eagles chase them all over the ground with a superior brand of football in which their skills, running and sharing the ball was on display.

South played a solid brand of foodball led by captain Kendell Saffin.

Saffin was in everything for the Demon’s creating opportunities for her teammates either in the middle, up forward or down back.

Showing strong support was Lauren Frost, Tess Andrews and Holly Smith in the first half.

In the second half the Eagles came out with a different attitude and put it right up to South with sheer determination, but the likes of Saffin, Frost, Tentye and Maddy Wormald showed why the red and white are at the top of the ladder.

To the Eagles’ credit they did play some good football in patches and will take big notes out of the game in a bid to go into next week much stronger.

Better players for the Eagles were Chloe Long, Heidi Berkin, captain Caroline McGrath and Shandeen Balshaw.

For the victors, Saffin, Cindy Itzerott, Andrews, Melanie Bateman, Alice Tentye and Scarlett Creek were influential in the 65-point win.

Kongorong came up against Mundulla who travelled again this week and looked a different side compared to last week’s defeat to South Gambier.

They must have gone back to the drawing board because Mundulla right from the first bounce looked as if they had came to play football with the centre clearance straight down to the forward line and putting the first major on the board.

Kongorong’s midfield of Stevie Collins and Jade Longbottom – who returned to the side – proved valuable with their presence and ability to get in and under the ball.

Janita Galloway was once again strong across the ground laying hard, crunching tackles to make the opposition earn each possessions.

Despite the Hawks putting up the fight, Mundulla was the better side on the day, making the most of opportunities and pressuring Kongorong at every contest and making the scoreboard tick over.

Better players for Mundulla were Natasha Horne, Grace Langley, Zoe Hawker, Casey McElroy, Anna Will and Lisa Hawker in the comprehensive win.

For the Hawks it was Collins, Stevi Clayton, Nikki Clayton, Sheba Miller, Hannah Kuhl-Miller and Sophie Longbottom on the best player list.

The Millicent Women’s Football Club will be still celebrating after its maiden win of the season against Kalangadoo.

Both sides have battled hard this season and now the Saints have the win it should make a difference to them going forward.

For the winner’s the better players were awarded to Bailey Levison, Crystal Golding, Laura Chester, Megan Tilby, Lauren Potter and Lily Hateley, while Emily Cooney, Jessica Stone, Sophia Dunn, Stephanie Bingham and Bec Wallace performed well for the Magpies.

In the last game for the weekend Kybybolite was up against North Gambier and judging by the score it was a goal feast for the Kyby side.

Holding North scoreless for the entire game, Kyby’s play makers delivered the ball to attack and made the scoreboard tick over.

In what was a percentage booster for Kyby going into the finals – which are only a matter of weeks away – they would have liked the boost.

The Tigers’ better performers were Lorrelle Walker, Chloe Perryman, Eadie Mustart, Penny Coleman, Sarah Thomson and Luca Roulston.

Kybybolite smashed the yellow and black 157-0 thanks to top performances from Della Hannaford, Alice Edmonds, Dellie Brown, Tyler Atkinson, Georgia Gill and Sarah Jude.
