Swimmers seek sustenance

Hundreds of young swimmers are enrolled for vacation classes from Tuesday onwards and many of them will be seeking sustenance after they leave the water from the nearby donut van.

The Lions van has been doing a brisk trade from its customary position near the foreshore war memorial since Boxing Day.

The number of Vacswim participants at Beachport is expected to soar well beyond 200 as no swimming lessons are being offered this summer at the Millicent swimming lake.

The Lions Club of Beachport and Rivoli Bay has operated the van each summer since about 1992 and feeding the Vacswim participants is always the busiest time.

As well as the delicious aroma, the van stands out as it was professionally re-painted by signwriters a year ago.

It will trade on every remaining day of the summer school holidays from mid-morning to late-afternoon.

Lions Club member Reg Hamilton said his fellow members are staffing the donut van along with community volunteers.

Among their customers have been Amy Tieleman and her daughter Piper (pictured) whose family are travelling around Australia in a motor home.

They were served by Mr Hamilton, Millicent Lions Club member Jack Gysbers as well as community volunteer Con Fitzgerald.
