Talented Millicent players ‘on the ball’

Two Limestone Coast youngsters have been selected by Basketball Australia to attend a national performance camp in Canberra for emerging pathway athletes.

Millicent basketballers Jack Haggett and Jackson Bowden join five other South Australian players born in 2006/07 to be selected.

The players have been selected based on performances from representative events including Australian junior championships and state performance programs.

The players were chosen from across Australia, making it an incredible achievement for Haggett and Bowden, who both started at Millicent in the hoops program.

The live-in camp will be held over three days and will include six on court sessions, as well as strength and conditioning education, and recovery and elite training standards.

The camp is run by Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence head coaches.

It is designed for young athletes who have been identified as having potential and gives them the opportunity to train with and against their peers from all round the country.

Former Victorian and New South Wales coaching state director and current director of high performance, coach development and talent identification Peter Lonergan is looking forward to the camp.

“There is so much depth in basketball talent in Australia thanks to the work of the state and territory associations and their respective performance programs,” he said.

“Australia is known globally for the consistent high level of talent that we produce, and we look forward to seeing our next generation of talent at the Centre of Excellence in January.”

Haggett and Bowden will join the rest of Australia’s young talent at the national performance camp at the centre of excellence in Canberra from January 23 to 25.
