Talks wipe out stigma

Port MacDonnell’s BayTown Group is helping locals ‘have the conversation’, with the assistance of the Grant District Council during Mental Health Awareness Month 2023 by hosting shark attack survivor and keynote speaker Chris Blowes (pictured right).

Mental Health Awareness Month is a SA Health led campaign which occurs annually to encourage all South Australians to talk about their own mental health and check in on those within their community.

This year’s theme is ‘have the conversation’.

Chris Blowes will be opening a conversation at Port MacDonnell by sharing his mental health journey after being left as an above the knee amputee from a shark attack.

He will share his honest journey through the highs and lows of how he adapted to the change of his newfound disability and overcame fear to continue enjoying the things he loves which includes surfing.

Now a passionate disability advocate, Australian Para Surf Champion, co-author of the book Caught Inside and keynote speaker, Mr Blowes said he is excited to visit the district and engage with the community.

“I am very much looking forward to coming down to the Port MacDonnell community to share my story and open up about the learnings and struggles I have faced in recovering from my shark attack and regaining my life,” Mr Blowes said.

“I understand the community may still be recovering from the recent shark attack and my thoughts are with the victim, her family and to all those who played a role. These events can certainly have a ripple effect on everyone involved and if anyone is struggling, I encourage you to reach out for support.”

Grant Mayor Kylie Boston said this would be a great event for locals to learn about challenges and opportunities for those with lived experience.

“Council is proud to support Chris sharing his amazing story with our community and helping us achieve key goals set within the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2020-2024,” Mayor Boston said.

“I encourage everyone to come along to this fantastic free event and have your own conversation about mental health.”

Those within and surrounding the district are invited to join Chris Blowes at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex on October 25 from 6.30pm.

Bookings are essential and must be made through the Port MacDonnell Community Complex on (08) 8738 3000.

This event is supported by the BayTown Group, Grant District Council, Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and Learning for a Better World (The LBW Trust).
