Teen chosen for youth premier league side

Alocal teenage cricket sensation has been selected for the under 16s side for the Western Waves.

South Gambier youngster Elwood Geary, 15, is the only player from the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association to be selected for the team.

The Western Waves team competes in the Youth Premier League in Victoria, and players are selected from performances from representative cricket.

Geary has now been selected three times for the Waves side, which is a standout achievement.

As a regular for South’s senior side, Geary has been able to develop his skills in the team consistently being a wicket taking option.

Geary believes his cricket has improved following his time with the Western Waves.

“I have worked on and improved on my variation when bowling,” he said.

“This gives me more options to take wickets.”

The selection process was not easy with six trials being conducted before the side was finalised, as well as some team training before the games.

The Waves team has completed two games now including a comprehensive win against the Suns in round 2.

Geary played a key role in the Waves win making a handy 25 with the bat, taking the wickets of both openers and getting his side off to a great start.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the selection for Geary was the opportunity to stay with the team throughout the week in between playing cricket.

Geary has been performing well in recent matches scoring a 2nd innings 31 not out against West Gambier, and taking a wicket with the first ball of the day.

His A grade captain Cam Jorgensen has been impressed with Geary so far this season.

“He’s only 15 at the moment, but he’s bowling well beyond his years at the moment at an intimidating pace,” Jorgensen said.

Geary is sure to have a bright cricketing future ahead of him and will play a large role this season in the Western Waves as well as South Gambier’s A grade success.
