Tennis grand slam set to shine

The Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association will host its grand finals this weekend.

Association president Andrew van den Hurk has put pen to paper to size up the grand finalists across the senior grades.

Division 1 – Glencoe v West Gambier

Division 1 was quite close this season, with any of the top four teams more than capable of winning the premiership.

In both semi finals it was surprising to see such one-sided results, with Glencoe and West both winning their matches 9 sets to 3.

Both teams brought their absolute best game on Saturday and it was more than enough to show they have what it takes to win the big one.

West Gambier hold one of the most experienced finals campaigners in Jo Sealey to help lead the otherwise very young side.

They have grown from strength to strength this season and will certainly take it up to Glencoe.

In their first clash way back in Round 2, the teams fought out a tough draw.

However, in their last clash back at the start of February, West Gambier overpowered Glencoe 8 sets to 4.

It will take some big performances from the likes of George White, Brady Cook and Jess Stutley to ensure West is right in this one.

On the Glencoe side, the side’s most consistent performers in Sarah Edwards and Dylan Childs will lead from the front and will look to prove they deserved to be top of the table for most of the season.

It would be a huge effort for Glencoe to come from bottom of the table last year to premiers in 2022-23, but it can be done.

President’s Prediction: Glencoe to win by two games.

Division 2 – Mount Gambier v Glencoe

These two clubs will enjoy centre stage on courts 4-6 at Olympic Park this weekend.

It’s a very interesting clash, with both teams having plenty of experience on the court.

Glencoe has had some player changes in the second half of the season due to some unplanned absences, so depending on who steps foot on the court this Saturday, it will make a big difference to who wins this one.

Mount Gambier claimed victory in the early season clash in Round 4 with a score of 8 sets to 4, while Glencoe won the most recent clash only four weeks ago 9 sets to 3.

Mount Gambier sat top of the ladder practically all season, but with Glencoe not far behind there could be an upset brewing.

Both of these teams have hung around finals for a few years, so both sides will be keen to take the prized premiership shield home at the end of the day.

President’s Prediction: Glencoe to win 7-5

Division 3 – West Gambier v Mount Gambier

The two teams will fight it out at Olympic Park this weekend to determine who wins the Division 3 premiership.

West Gambier has enjoyed one of the most dominant seasons in recent memory, going undefeated all season, and only really being challenged on one occasion.

Fortunately enough, that was against their now grand final opponents in Mount Gambier.

Back in round 4, West only just snuck over the line by a mere six games. In the more recent encounter, Round 9, West had a more comfortable 8-3 victory.

On each occasion there were a couple of each team’s best players missing, so with a full list to pick from this week it is sure to be an absolute belter of a match.

Both teams have quite young lists, so it will be an exciting day for all involved and hopefully we see a very close finish.

President’s Prediction: West Gambier to win 7-5.

Ladies Doubles – Reidy Park v Glencoe

The Ladies Doubles grand final heads to Corriedale Park this Saturday to play off for the premiership.

Reidy Park has been the dominant side all season and finished a convincing 45 points ahead of Glencoe on the ladder.

There were some mixed results throughout the season between these two teams, with Reidy winning two of the three meetings.

Glencoe tasted success convincingly in their last encounter 6 sets to 0, however Reidy Park did not have its full contingent out on the court that week.

If seasoned players Rosie Collins and Bernadette Nash front up this week for Reidy Park they will cause some problems for their opponents and it will be an uphill battle for Glencoe all afternoon.

Led by Tasja Barelds, Glencoe did however succeed in winning last year’s premiership over Reidy, and they will hold some hope of going back-to-back if all things go their way.

An interesting matchup for sure.

President’s Prediction: Reidy Park to win 4-2.

Mixed Doubles – Centrals v Moorak Gold

Centrals and Moorak Gold head to the courts at Mount Gambier Tennis Club this weekend to fight out for the title of Mixed Doubles champions.

These two teams have only come up against each other once this season, with Centrals taking the chocolates 4-2 only four weeks ago.

Unfortunately, the early season Round 3 clash was a washout.

This match will be a very hard one to predict, with quite a few of Centrals’ regular players unfortunately not being available this weekend.

Moorak Gold holds a couple of extremely consistent performers in Craig Nisbet and Alison Schultz, so no matter who turns up for Centrals on the day, they will most certainly have their work cut out.

President’s Prediction: Centrals to win by four games.
