Tennis lesson served up

The third round in the Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association’s summer competition on the weekend had the best weather yet giving the chance for all matches to be completed.

Mount Schank hosted Mount Gambier Tennis Club and the home side suffered a convincing loss.

From the get go Mount Gambier was on top with Mat Stark winning the opening singles match 0-6.

Will Cameron also had minimal trouble overcoming his opponent in his singles match, beating Brendan McInnes 3-6.

Alex Laube and William Le Cornu played out a tight set with a tie breaker required to separate the two. Le Cornu ultimately claimed the set to put Mount Gambier up 0-3.

The domination continued with Hayden Hancock and Alita Huyser only losing three matches between them for their singles wins.

Bella Laube showed some fight for Mount Schank and claimed its only set win for the day, just beating out Giann Ferguson 5-7.

Shae Delany won the final rubber to take Mount Gambier into the doubles matches leading 1-6.

The first rubber doubles matchup was a long and hard-fought match.

Mount Schank’s Will Boston and McInnes won the first set 6-4, but Mount Gambier’s Stark and Cameron fought back to tie it all up with a 3-6 win in the second set.

The two sides could not be separated in the final set with a marathon 18-game final set required to split them.

Stark and Cameron were the winners beating out their Mount Schank opponents, 6-4, 3-6, 8-10.

Laube and Meyer were dominated, only winning the one game in their match against Le Cornu and Hancock.

Mount Gambier then comfortably won the final three doubles matches to end the result 1-11 with Mount Schank suffering a third straight defeat.

Uniting hosted West Gambier in a much closer contest than the one at Mount Schank.

George White went down 1-6 to Andrew Vandenhurk in the first singles match, but West Gambier claimed the second match.

Jace Maxwell was excellent in his first singles match winning 6-1, then Toby Stutley took another one back for West Gambier with a 6-2 win over Travis Crowe.

Jessica Stutley and Tessa Megaw’s match was closely contested however Stutley’s serving helped her to claim a 5-7 win.

Alison Telford got Uniting back on the winning side before Jade Delany went down in the final rubber.

Vandenhurk and Kobe Cole won the opening doubles match for Uniting, but West Gambier fought back to claim the following match.

West Gambier’s Jessica Stutley and Emily Jolley were excellent in their match against Megaw and Telford, despite the opposition’s best efforts the pair worked cohesively and were dangerous on serve.

Megaw and Delaney required a win to keep Uniting in the hunt and the pair delivered.

Despite some resistance the duo held on to a 6-4 win for the overall score to sit 4-5 ahead of the final match. Telford and Delaney gave it their all in the last match but West Gambier were too strong.

West Gambier played with great harmony and Jolley was excellent around the net to help her side hold on to claim a 6-4 win for the set, and West Gambier a 5-7 win for the match.

In Division two West Gambier Blue’s hot start was enough to beat Suttontown/Glencoe.

West Gambier Blue won the first five sets in the singles before Steph Beck beat Kirra McKenny in a tie breaker to get Suttontown/Glencoe on the board.

Suttontown/Glencoe then claimed the first two of the doubles matches, before West Gambier Blue returned to its winning ways to quite comfortably win the next three rubbers.

The final match of the doubles saw Suttontown/Glencoe claim a consolation win of 6-3, with the final result Suttontown/Glencoe 4 to West Gambier Blue 8.

At Malseed Park West Gambier Red put on a clinic against a struggling Mount Schank/Mount Gambier team.

Mount Schank/Mount Gambier did not claim a single match from the 12 rubbers played.

It was a total domination from West Gambier Red with Mount Schank/Mount Gambier only winning nine games for the day.

No Mount Schank/Mount Gambier player won more than two games in a set in a tough day for the visitors.

In Division three Mount Gambier claimed a 10-2 win over Moorak, with Angus Hopgood a highlight for Mount Gambier not losing any of his matches.

The match up between Glencoe and Centrals was a much closer contest finishing 6-6.

After losing the first four matches, Centrals fought back to win six of the last eight matches.

Glencoe’s Will Maloney and Centrals Aimee Marshall were both excellent for their respective sides.

Maloney was well composed in close contests and did well to hold on to lead, despite Maloney’s effort Centrals took the win, 54 games to Glencoe’s 50.

Suttontown and Mil Lel was another matchup that was not closely played out.

Suttontown’s Christian McCombe won the first singles match against Lochie Arnold 6-4, and from there it was downhill for Suttontown.

Mil Lel claimed the next 11 wins and Suttontown only managed to win 19 more games.

The A boys finished 3-3 in West Gambier and Mount Gambier Blue’s match-up, Mount Schank/Mil Lel beat Mount Gambier White 2-4, while over at Corriedale Park Uniting/Reidy won comfortably against Glencoe 5-1.

The A Girls matches were both tied affairs as West/Mount Schank/Uniting won on games over West Gambier by five games, with Bella Laube playing a crucial role in that only losing two games in her two matches.

The Mount Gambier/Glencoe and Mil Lel/Suttontown contest was also tied up at the end of the six matches, with a games split of 22 and 28 in favour of Mount Gambier/Glencoe being the difference.
