Tennis stars take on state’s best

The ANZ Mobile Lending State Foundation Cup returned to Berri, South Australia last week, with 152 players taking part in the four day event.

Tennis SA, in conjunction with the Berri Tennis Club, hosted the event from Tuesday September 28 to Friday October 1, 2021.

The ANZ Mobile Lending State Foundation Cup saw teams from six country regions across the state take part in 11, 13, 15 and 17 and Under age groups in both team and individual events, with a strong focus on the development pathway for junior regional players.

“The ANZ Mobile Lending State Foundation Cup brought together players from around the state, highlighting the pathway and opportunities available to all,” Tennis SA Competitions Lead Luke Doughty said.

“It has been great to see not only some fantastic matches on court, but also some great sportsmanship on display. Our congratulations to all of the players who have been a part of this year’s event.

“A special thank you to the Berri Tennis Club for their hospitality, time and efforts, along with our new naming rights sponsor ANZ Mobile Lending for their generous support.”

Thanks to the grand efforts of 24 players, the South East placed second overall behind Hills and Fleurieu in the overall results.

The 17 and Under side of Poppy Moyle-Read, Jorja Mitchell, Zayne Young and Joel Childs claimed second place in the competition.

Moyle-Read and Young stood out in particular winning the respective male and female 17 and Under individual events obtaining selection in the regional state team.

Young also secured the sportsmanship award.

The region’s 15 and Under unit also finished the tournament as runner-up with Lucy Handbury, Kiele Longbottom, Jayme Young, Jess Stutley, Sid Malone, Kobe Cole, Jonty Collins and Jace Maxwell.

Stutley finished third in the individual honours and will represent Regional SA late in 2021.

Another special mention to Longbottom who was awarded the sportsmanship award after being voted by the opposition players.

Ella Jolley, Tegan Lythgo, Maggie Collins, Kiersten Cole, Sam Haase, Hamish Gordon, William LeCornu and Jarrod Carey pushed the South East to a third place finish in the 13 and Under competition.

Lythgo performed well on the court to finish third in the individual event.

The strong result obtained selection in the regional state team.

A total of 32 players from across the six regional areas took part in a Super 11s event alongside the 2021 ANZ Mobile Lending State Foundation Cup. Teams were named after Australian tennis players and consisted of four players from different regions, with a mix of boys and girls.

Players enjoyed a training session in perfect conditions on day, while on day two the teams played three rounds of matches.

All matches were extremely close with players showing exceptional sportsmanship.

Day two also included a dress up round where players dressed up as tennis legends and a project round which brought in their artwork based around their team namesakes – Bowrey, Fitzgerald, Goolagong-Cawley, Hewitt, Molik, Newcombe, Rafter, Turnbull.

After four days, Team Molik was named as the winning team and South East star Annabelle Gordon played an integral part in the win.

Team Hewitt finished a close second, while an additional 16 players also received awards for sportsmanship, best on ground and best team person.
