Two local downhill mountain bike riders will take on the fourth and final round of the Victorian Downhill series this weekend in Narbethong.
Mount Gambier brothers Shane and Justin deJong will tackle the track, based just the other side of Melbourne in a small Victorian high country town, making for a long drive on the Friday after work.
The track, younger brother Shane explained, is “super fast the whole way down”.
“It surprised me last time having an average of 40 and a top speed of about 62kph, there’s no room for error,” deJong said.
A longer track in distance compared to the South Australian hills makes it difficult to adjust to the different style of track with minimal practice.
The local Mount Gambier boys were lucky to gain entry into the competition as it sold out the capped 350 entries in the first week with another 100 on a waiting list to take part in the event.
Justin said the race will be the last of the interstate races before the local SA races start in May with a much needed month break from competition after a busy summer in Victoria.
“I really enjoy racing in Victoria where the tracks mean business, it’s a lot more technically challenging than what we usually race on, any opportunity to race my dedicated downhill bike always sets up a good weekend away,” he said.
