It has been a long wait, but Thoroughbred racing finally returns to Mount Gambier on Wednesday after a 21-month absence.
The return of racing at Glenburnie Racecourse has seen support from Victoria and Adelaide trainers with the meeting attracting 105 acceptors for the provincial program.
Eran Boyd was one of a handful of jockeys to ride at the track during recent trials and gave a glowing assessment of the new racing surface.
“The track trialled really well,’’ Boyd said.
“Very happy with how it is looking and feeling underneath, all horse trialled well.
“It’s one of the best tracks I have ridden on in a while.
“I’m looking forward to the first race day back here in what seems like forever.”
Racing SA Chief Operating Officer Vaughn Lynch it was imperative for the growth and strength of SA racing to have Mount Gambier back racing.
“Mount Gambier is a key piece for the whole South Australian racing industry, strategically placed with access to Victoria as well, as a training base,’’ he said.
“The feedback from the jockeys (following the trials) has been fantastic and it’s a credit to Dave Shepherdson (track supervisor) and the whole team at Mount Gambier.”
