Tigers open account with hard-fought win against Casterton Sandford

Round 3 of the Limestone Coast Football League featured several exciting finishes and high scoring games, with games played at Casterton, Millicent and at West Gambier.

Casterton Sandford V North Gambier


North Gambier headed across the border to Casterton on Saturday in a clash of the cats, with the Tigers claiming their first win of the season.

The first quarter was neck to neck with both sides getting on the score board regularly, the Cats had six scoring shots and came away with four goals.

Meanwhile North kept in touch with the Cats, having four scoring shots and converting three.

The Cats held a seven point lead at the first change, but North fired back with a big response in the second quarter, kicking six goals and gaining control of the match.

Casterton struggled under the pressure, only able to convert one of five scoring shots for a goal, giving North a half time lead of 21 points.

The goal kicking onslaught continued in the third period with both sides hitting the scoreboard.

The Tigers continued to hold their lead with a three goal quarter but the Cats were looking to erase their earlier mistakes, booting four goals to cut the lead to 16 points ahead of the final term.

North shifted up a gear in the last period to put the game to bed, kicking five goals while holding the Cats to one, sealing their first win of the season.

North Gambier’s Toby de Wit had a monster game, kicking five goals in his side’s win.

North Gambier defeated Casterton Sandford 17.6 (108) to 10.7 (67)

West Gambier V South Gambier


West Gambier and South Gambier battled it out on Saturday with the Roos coming away with the hard fought win.

The first quarter was low scoring with plenty of back and forth with the ball as both sides had three scoring shots and each finished the quarter with a goal, leaving scores tied eight a piece.

The grind continued in the second term with both sides having chances to score, but the Dees battled hard and dominated the contest for a majority of the quarter.

The Roos picked up one goal whereas the Dees bagged two to take the lead and hold a six point lead at half time.

The third period was another low scoring affair with both teams having limited scoring chances.

The Roos bounced back and scored two goals but South managed a goal of their own to tie the game 29-all at three quarter time.

South bagged two goals in the final term, but that was not enough as the Roos kicked three goals to give the Dees their first loss of the season.

West Gambier’s Lawrence Bradley-Brown had another great game for the Roos and was instrumental in the win.

West Gambier defeated South Gambier 7.7 (49) to 6.6 (42).

Millicent V East Gambier


Millicent’s dominant start to the season continued Saturday evening with a big win over East Gambier at Millicent.

The first quarter was high scoring with both sides getting on the scoreboard, the Saints had nine scoring shots resulting in six goals while the Doggies had a competitive quarter, also having nine scoring shots but only converting four.

The Saints held a 10 point lead at the first break.

In the second quarter East continued to hit the scoreboard with three goals, but the Doggies struggled to stop Millicent with the Saints bagging eight goals in the quarter to take a comfortable 43 point lead into the main break.

East slowed down in the third period as they only kicked one goal, but the Saints continued to dominate the game with four goals and were up by 60 points at the last change.

East had their best scoring quarter in the final term, kicking five goals to close out the game.

But it was not enough as the Saints kicked four goals to pick up another win this year.

Millicent’s Frazer Bradley had another brilliant game on Saturday night, kicking six goals and continuing to lead the league in goals.

Millicent defeated East Gambier 22.12 (144) to 13.11 (89)
