Tigers start strong in Barber Shield top of table clash

West Gambier v North Sportsman’s

There was a top of the table Barber Shield clash on Saturday at Malseed Park as West Gambier hosted North Sportsmans with the Tigers spending all of day one at the crease.

The Tigers got off to a strong start with Brad Robinson and Michael Johnston at the crease, with Robinson facing 52 and Johnston facing 82.

Neither made a huge impact on the scoreboard but they both set the tone for the side as Robinson contributed 12 and Johnston finished on 20.

North’s captain Mitch Lewis was next to the crease, stepping up to make 35 off 140.

After Lewis’ dismissal the Tigers had a few struggles at the top end of the order as Elliott Fisher was out for a duck while Nick McInerney made four and Nicolas Brown registered a single.

The Tigers picked up the pace in the second half of the innings with some great performances from across the list.

North’s Isaac Mulraney had a standout performance for the Tigers, scoring a half century before getting out forn 51.

Declan Kenny was another top performer for the Tigers with 19 while Matthew Robinon put 11 on the board and Tim Young finished on 12.

The Roos had the Tigers all out for 174 and will head to the crease on day two.

West’s Trent Badman had a great day with the ball, taking four wickets.

Penola v Mil Lel

Mil Lel have put themselves in a great position to come away with a win in Penola as they faced the Eagles in a crucial game.

Mil Lel began the day at the crease and started well with Jarrod Sanders and Will Rowland opening.

Both got the ball rolling for their side as Sanders made 10 off 15 while Rowland finished with 20.

Mil Lel had another solid contribution in Vaibhav Patel who added 19 to the board.

There were a few low scores in the middle of the list as Craig Lock contributed six while Archer Virtanen made eight and Harry Hicks had a rough day, finishing with two.

Mil Lel got a boost of runs in the back end of the innings with Boyd Milhouse and Toby Grigg at the crease.

Both scored some much needed runs with Millhouse making 42 while Grigg put 24 on the board.

Mil Lel finished well with Mason Brown making 15 off 10 to help his side to a score of 151.

Penola came to the crease and Mil Lel created some problems for the Eagles early on, claiming the wickets of Jack Mullan and Matthew Honner who combined for only 10 runs.

Lewis March did well to weather the storm to sit on 24 after facing 116 balls and will head back out to the crease on day two.

The Eagles continued to struggle down the list with Eli Hunter and Nathan Fulton both getting out for ducks.

Penola’s struggles continued as they were unable to get much going with Michael Waters out for five while Finn Skeer made seven.

In the later innings Penola were able to get a few runs as Joshua Doyle made 10 while Curt Evans added eight to the score.

Penola finished the day 8/70.

Mil Lel’s Boyd Milhouse had a great day with the ball, taking four wickets.

Mil Lel’s Will Rowland thought his side played well on Saturday despite having to bat first on a tough wicket.

“Losing the toss and being sent into bat was not an ideal start,” he said.

“On a spicy Penola wicket, we were hoping to bowl first and capitalise on the conditions.

“Our openers got us off to a good start, facing out a fiery spell from Michael Waters.

“Jarrod Sanders fell cheaply, but the team built on their start solidly. A late cameo from Boyd Millhouse and Toby Grigg got us to a modest total of 151.”

Rowland said he was pleased with how the bowlers performed.

“Our opening bowlers got us off to a great start with the ball, picking up four quick wickets,” he said.

“Boyd Milhouse did damage with the ball, taking four big wickets with all our other bowlers contributing from their ends.

South Gambier v East Gambier

East Gambier are in a great position to pick up a very important win after day one of the clash against South Gambier at Blue Lake Sports Park.

The Doggies started the day with the ball and got right to work.

South openers Sukhbir Singh and Noah Maxwell could not get much going as Singh was dismissed for eight while Maxwell made four.

The tough day continued for the Dees as Jed Sims struggled, finishing with six off 11 while Kobi Maxwell fell for a duck.

The Dees finally got some much needed runs as Adam Kuhl opened the shoulders and had a solid innings, making 29 off 34.

Besides Kuhl, South struggled at the back end of the order, with ducks from Robbie Drenthen and Jaggar Geary while Elwood Geary and Jared Kuhl both did solid work in a short time with Geary making nine and Kuhl seven.

The Doggies were able to get the Dees all out in 23 overs with South finishing with 72 runs.

East’s three bowlers all had big days with Emerson Marks taking three wickets, Luke Patching claiming two while Marc Roberts led the side with five.

The Doggies wasted no time at the crease chasing down South’s lead as Alex Hill made 34 while fellow opener Ben Hentschke chipped in with 14.

East will be in a great spot to continue to build on to their score with Emerson Marks and Connor Little at the crease.

Both currently sit on 13 runs each.

At the end of day two East are 2/76.
