Title up for grabs at Borderline

The action never slows down at Borderline Speedway with another huge night of racing under lights tomorrow evening.

Wingless Sprints and Formula 500’s will begin a three-night fling at “The Bullring” but the big prize will be the 71st SA Speedcar Title.

More than 100 cars are expected to be squeezed into the paddock after the opening of border restrictions allowed many entries to flood in.

More than 60 Wingless Sprint cars are expected to hit the dirt for the opening round of the Midfield Group Summer Slam Series.

Many who raced at “The Bullring” last month for the state championship will return including winner and former Mount Gambier resident Tyson Martin.

Locals to look out for include Mitchell Broome, Kirby Hillyer, Kahn Aston and Rory Button.

A total of 34 Formula 500’s will compete in the dash for cash in their first appearance at Borderline since the opening night of the season.

Angelo Karoussis will look to taste the same success, while Brendan Zadow and Jordan Rae hope to climb further up the podium.

A small, but quality field of 18 cars are in the running for the first SA Speedcar title in two years.

Nathan Smee was the winner in 2020 and was not given the chance to defend his title last year due to COVID-19. However, he returns to Mount Gambier with his only goal victory, so look out for the #N14.

Troy Jenkins is another contender having been a state and national champion who has raced in America, while Andy Pearce and Garth Thompson are some hard chargers.

The title will be decided at Borderline Speedway for the third straight time and president Cary Jennings said it will be the highlight of a loaded night of racing supported by MG Plasterers.

“We have more than 100 cars to try and park in our pits area which is exciting,” he said.

“There will be 18 competitors from South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria racing in the South Australian Speedcar Championship.

“They have four cylinder engines and are well developed having been around since the 1950s.

“They were called midgets before changing their names to Speedcars and look very similar to a wingless sprint, but the chassis and tyres are smaller.

“They are very fast, just as fast as sprint cars, so they always put on a good spectacle.”

Jennings said the other two categories would also put on a show.

“The Wingless Sprints Summer Slam are led by young Tyson Martin after winning the state title and he is back to take home the accolades again,” he said.

“But we have a huge field trying to take home some trophies including former state and national champion Joel Chadwick and all the locals.

“Three locals Jordon Mansell, Ryan Harry and Josh Munn will try to get onto the F500 podium.

“One driver to note is Angelo Karoussis because he is leading the South Australian state series.”
