Top dogs have their day over Easter

The Mount City and District Kennel Club’s Easter Dogfest attracted every man, woman and their dog to the Len Lewis Memorial Dog Park over the Easter weekend.

There were six championship shows staged over the four days which amassed over 400 entries from as far and wide as New South Wales and Tasmania.

This year’s judging panel included Carol and James Beckett, Margaret Davis, Graham Kerr, Cherri Seeber and Sharron Taylor.

Mount City and District Kennel Club president Mike Brown said entry numbers were slightly up from last year.

“Overall, it averages out to 412 which is a good entry for here considering we have six shows at Port Pirie going, the Sydney Royale and Melbourne have put five shows on,” he said.

“Six shows makes a good weekend and they can base around here because half the time travelling is the problem.

“We had a shower, but it is good dog showing weather.

“If it is too hot, the dogs do not perform, if it is too wet then we all get drenched.”

Mr Brown said he considered the Easter Dogfest the best country dog show in the state.

“I think what people like are the way it is set up, the conditions, the grass – it all comes into it,” he said.

“The whole thing is you have got to do it so that people want to come back.

“If you do not keep it up to a standard then you lose.

“When the locals know it is on, we get good feedback from them.”

In every show the judge will select a winner from each of the seven groups: Toy, Terrier, Gundog, Hound, Working Dog, Utility and Non-Sporting.

The seven Best in Group winners will then compete to crown one dog Best in Show.

Among the weekend’s winners was Matthew Fisher’s Border Collie Australian Supreme Champion Nahrof Icebreaker who won Best in Show for the Yellow Show on Saturday.
