The combined Mount Gambier Rotary Clubs are to auction off a significant local wine collection, with all proceeds going to the Stand Like Stone Foundation.
A collection of over 60 lots of quality aged Australian and French wines will be auction off at a dinner event, to be held at Mount Gambier’s City Hall on March 2.
The collection is being made available by Robyn Downs (pictured) and family on behalf of the late Warwick Downs, who passed away in December 2021.
Mr Downs, a prominent local lawyer, was a valued member of the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West for over 50 years and also a past president and Paul Harris recipient.
Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West’s Neville Gilbertson said the Mr Downs was a lover of fine and classic wines, particularly Australian reds.
“Mrs Downs, in discussion with her family, decided to donate the collection to the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West, to raise funds for the future benefit of the community in memory of Warwick,” he said.
“It should be an enjoyable evening, with a rare opportunity for wine lovers to add some impressive red and white varieties to their collections, whilst also supporting the Limestone Coast community through the foundation.”
Stand Like Stone chief executive Roger Babolka said funds raised through the action would have a direct benefit to local students.
“With the full support of Mrs Downs and subsequent discussions between the Rotary Clubs and the foundation, it was agreed that auction proceeds are to go to Stand Like Stone and specifically support local students undertaking nursing studies,” he said.
The auction event will be conducted by well-known local auctioneer and wine producer David Herbert.
